Sales Intern

June - August 2019 • Garden City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed getting a first look at what it was like to work in an office and this was a good introduction to sales

What I wish was different

I wish the internship program was more organized. Even from the beginning it seemed pretty unorganized

Advice

If you are going to do this internship, don’t do it a garden city. There is a possible way to make money, but no intern at the Garden City office did.

Sales/Marketing Intern

June - August 2018 • Southfield, MI

What I liked

I was able to become certified in accident and health insurance. It was really interesting to learn about the insurance world. I loved working for Aflac because of the services they provide for their policyholders. I still recommend their services to family and friends.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have applied to Aflac sooner. I was lucky enough that they hired me at the end of June until August. Unfortunately, due to my short time being there, I wasn't able to experience their sales school. I believe that it would have given me a comprehensive experience of Aflac.

Advice

Aflac is a great company. It's better to get involved while you can to create your book of business. Working for Aflac is suited better for motivated individuals who are outgoing.

Sales Intern

May - August 2018 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

Talking to small businesses in my area and having the ability to provide employee benefits.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a set location to meet my supervisor. The sales internship involved a lot of driving around the city and visiting these small businesses. I do not prefer to have my office in my car, It would have been better to have a work space in the office.

Advice

You cannot ride the high's and low's of a sales agent, because you will be exhausted within the first week. You have to set goals and have emotional strength to skip the high's and low's and take the ride slowly.

May - August 2018 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

Aflac did a really good job training us. Aflac also put each of the interns on a team that helped us do our best. We were our own agents for the summer. We had to find our own clients which was difficult, but I learned a lot from the experience.

What I wish was different

I didn't realize at the beginning of the summer that it took about 1 to 2 months from when you first talked to a potential customer to when they actually signed up as a client. You only get paid when you get a customer.

Advice

It is discouraging at first but if you can get past the first month then you can learn a lot and gain a lot of confidence.

Sales Intern

May - July 2018 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

I really liked the people that I got to work with. People talk about how you need to enjoy your coworkers and the work to enjoy the job and I really did enjoy all the people I was able to meet and connect with.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to see the whole sales process through from start to finish. When working in sales you have to depend a lot on the customer. And there are many different schedules that you work around so I wasn't able to see many sales from start to finish.

Advice

Go get experience. I was not looking to be a saleswoman but I learned so much about customer relations and I have a respect for salespeople because they put in a lot of time and effort to do what is right for the customer.

Insurance Agent

May - August 2018 • Columbia, MO

What I liked

They teach you like a real employee at Aflac They send you to their sales school You must become a licensed insurance agent You are in the field the whole time learning useful skills

What I wish was different

The pay is 100% commission which is hard when your book of business is so small and time is short The amount of product knowledge needed in the time frame is differcult Closing a sale in three months is not enough time unless the relationship was already existing

Advice

Start early with building a book of business and 10 strong strong strong leads in the first month, then spend the next month narrowing it down and building the relationship with those business owners, then in the last month close the sale. Have money saved up because there is a really good chance of going months without pay. A second job for cash flow is what I chose to do.

Benefits consultant

June - August 2018 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

It was great to be able to learn how to sell a product that so many people don't think they need. It really helped to understand explaining consumer needs as a marketer. I also enjoyed the experience of talking to small business owners as well as familiarizing myself with the surrounding area.

What I wish was different

I would like for them to have given us an upfront allowance of some kind. Just enough fo it to feel worth driving around cold calling businesses.

Advice

If you don't make a sale within the first month, move on to another job where you can start making money.

What I liked

Learned how to cold call and find leads and how to use a CRM system

What I wish was different

Advice

While I learned a lot about the sales call process, I would avoid this position due to various factors of the local branch that caused this to be a poor experience.

Human Resources Intern

August - December 2017 • Irwin, PA

What I liked

I have loved having the opportunity to learn about my field through a number of different activities in such a diverse industry. I have been fortunate enough to gain experience in recruiting, and scheduling, as well as in sales. I have drawn from my backgrounds in Marketing and Human Resources to be able to complete recruiting-based tasks. Aside from the valuable skills and knowledge gained from working at my internship site, I believe the take-away I cherish most, so far, is the realization that all of my studies can and should be used harmoniously to achieve a desired outcome. This internship has really allowed for me to blend and apply my knowledge from my three majors and two minors in order to best complete tasks at hand.

What I wish was different

There is not anything that I would wish to change; I have truly had an excellent experience. If anything, I would like for the internship to last longer. I believe there is still so much more to learn from my internship site.

Advice

In general, but for my internship specifically, I would encourage future interns to take advantage of any opportunity offered to them. Not only will accepting opportunities enhance learning and provide for a fuller more well-rounded internship experience, but opportunities made available through the internship could also have a positive impact on a future career. For example, Aflac offered me the opportunity to earn my PA insurance license, which I accepted. Doing so has expanded the scope of activities I am able to learn and preform on site, as well provided me with additional skills and a license, which I am able to note on my resume.

Human Resources Intern

February - May 2018 • Manhattan Beach, CA

What I liked

I liked being able to have hands-on experience with recruitment using Indeed.

What I wish was different

The location I was assigned to. Originally, I applied to work in the Torrance location. But, was told last minute that I would be relocated to Manhattan Beach.

Advice

Communication is important. There have been times where clients have returned my calls after business hours and wanted to schedule overview meetings. After speaking them to and scheduling their meetings, I had to relay the information back to the lead. Don't be afraid to reach out!
