What I liked

The project I got to work on taught me a lot about software engineering as an industry and best practices for working on a large codebase, which is something that just doesn't happen at school. Everyone was very supportive on my team and worked to give me great opportunities.

What I wish was different

I wish the environment hadn't felt so finance-y despite it being a software engineering job.

Advice

Definitely try it out if you think you'd be interested in a job there because most everyone got a return offer!

Summer Analyst

May - August 2018 • Princeton, NJ

What I liked

BlackRock has a very well structured summer analyst program and they highly value the intern's experience during their time with the firm. In the group I was a part of there were 22 other interns from all over the country and with diverse areas of study. We were given multiple long term projects in teams of other interns to work on over the course of the summer including a debate on current industry trends, a portfolio solutions challenge and a quick pitch competition. We received frequent and helpful feedback from management and the full-time employees were more than willing to lend a helping hand.

What I wish was different

NA

Advice

This was a great experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and I learned more in my short time there then I ever thought was possible.

Summer Analyst

What I liked

The people. BlackRock has a great community of employees and an environment that really is conducive to furthering your professional skills.

What I wish was different

Wish I had more time there and more of a structured program.

Advice

Be willing to learn. Your knowledge going into any finance internship is minuscule at best - the people who didn’t receive a return offer were those unwilling to listen and to learn from experienced professionals.

Aladdin Client Services Summer Analyst

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

It gave me the opportunity to interact with BlackRock's investment platform and was a role that integrated finance and technology. My internship included a lot of learning, networking and team work. I loved the full time employees and the mentorship platforms that were offered to interns. I also worked on a project that has now become an additional branch in one of the firm's businesses and doing that in a reputable and global firm boosted my confidence and reassured me that all is possible with hard work.

What I wish was different

I wish the firm could have sponsored our first month housing

Advice

Do not be intimidated by other people's backgrounds (college, socioeconomic) rather remind yourself that you are there because you deserve it.

What I liked

BlackRock dedicated a lot of resources and time to their intern program. There was many opportunities to meet individuals outside of your specific department, and network. Summer analysts at BlackRock are treated like full time employees, so it was great to feel like the work I was doing was meaningful to my department's success.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have taken advantage of learning more about different departments.

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up and reach out. Everyone is really excited to help you be successful, so make sure to connect with individuals at BlackRock.

Quant/RIsk Analyst

June - August 2017 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I was given very interesting projects where I was able to use my math background and build my tech/coding skills. Had an awesome team that included me in every meeting, global or local, and were all incredibly smart human beings that I enjoyed spending long days with. In addition, they were very helpful in answering my 1000+ questions. Also what I really appreciated was having a "buddy" (every intern is assigned one), who is there for work/non-work related concerns, but what I took away from having a buddy was going to someone that you feel more comfortable and safe with when asking (perhaps a stupid/risky) question.

What I wish was different

I would have loved more of a rotational program within the RQA department, just to explore all different teams. But I'm going back so hopefully I'll get a chance!

Advice

Write everything your boss says down. It is not because you should expect your boss to be rude or harsh but it helps you gain the most from the short experience. You want to learn fast and not have to go over something again that your boss/supervisor told you a week ago. I would even recommend reviewing notes every night or morning. Takes 10 minutes and very worthwhile.

BlackRock Summer Analyst

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Loved the culture at BlackRock. I felt very welcomed even though I was a summer analyst and always felt supported by my peers. I learned so much and everyone was extremely supportive of my personal growth.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more summer analysts on my team. I worked on a smaller team so I happened to be the only one, but I was still able to connect with the other summer analysts across the firm.

Advice

If applying to BlackRock I would encourage focusing on collaboration since it was such a key part of my summer experience.
