Summary of Position Description

The individual performing this role is required to approach the position with Cru in a manner that seeks, individually and with others, the guidance of the Holy Spirit through prayer. The Data Engineer - Entry role monitors and evaluates data structures that are used to enable diverse ministry areas to implement their enterprise data and analytics strategy. The individual will work with the manager of the Data Engineering and Analytics team to assist in the development of enterprise data models, and the processes and tools to improve data integrity, quality, governance, availability, and usability. They will utilize the best in class ETL/ELT tools to monitor and evaluate data pipelines that integrate data from multiple sources for the organization’s enterprise data warehouse (EDW). Entry level Data Engineers are expected to help identify coding errors and opportunities for optimization of performance within the EDW environment.

NOTE: This is a missionary support raising role meaning that Cru pays you from the missionary support you raise. We train and coach you well in this process. The application is open until March 1, 2026 and decisions are made thereafter. We also host a preview weekend for this role in Orlando in early February 2026.


For this role:

  • Gather requirements for dimensional data models and evaluate models for BI performance in collaboration with BI and data analysts.
  • Assist in the creation of business cases, including requirements and ROI for enterprise data warehouse (EDW) projects.
  • Assist in the development of ETL/ELT processes and queries to integrate data from disparate sources, such as Oracle, Postgres, and MySQL databases, into our enterprise data warehouse (EDW).
  • Assist in the creation of data pipeline orchestration solutions to move data from one point to another and coordinate the combining, verifying, and storing of the data for analysis.
  • Monitor pipeline performance, troubleshoot issues, and optimize for efficiency and reliability. Recommend opportunities to improve scalability, reliability, and manageability of data pipelines.
  • Follow CI/CD best practices for data integrations as determined by team lead, data engineering specialists and data architect.
  • Analyze code to find causes of errors and recommend solutions for those errors.
  • Evaluate automated unit and integration testing pipelines to ensure quality of data.
  • Respond to and resolve service requests from customers. These may be in the form of inquiries or HelpDesk tickets.

Other Functions (non-essential)

  • Perform related duties or special projects as assigned.
  • Demonstrate and model personal spiritual discipline and assist in development of an environment on the team where individual team members grow in their own Christian walks.
  • Personal development - engage in the Staff Development process including creating and implementing a Personal Development Plan (PDP) targeting areas of growth.

Christian Faith

  • The individual serving in this role must:
    • Exhibit a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and a willingness and ability to share how this relationship began

Knowledge of:

  • Familiarity with programming and CI/CD best practices
  • Database terminology and functionality
  • Proficiency in SQL
  • Proficiency with data warehousing concepts, ETL/ELT processes, and data governance principles.
  • Familiarity of ETL/ELT technologies, such as Fivetran and dbt
  • Familiarity with Oracle, GCP, AWS, Redshift, Postgesql, or other major database technology
  • Awareness of dimensional data modeling
  • Python programming a plus
  • Orchestration experience a plus, such as Apache Airflow or Shipyard

Ability to: 

  • Be a continuous learner and keep up to date on changing trends in data engineering.
  • Proven ability to handle large volumes of data and communicate data lineage and architecture in an understandable and actionable way.
  • Understand and navigate complex data sets
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey complex data findings to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Exhibit strong problem-solving skills to identify data-related issues, troubleshoot problems, and propose appropriate solutions.
  • Give strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy and quality of data analysis and reporting.
  • Work effectively in a cross-functional team environment, collaborating with business users, data engineers, and other stakeholders.
  • Work independently with continual feedback from more senior level Data Engineers, team leader or data architect.


 

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

  • Data engineering certifications a plus, such as dbt Certified Developer certification

Education Requirements

Preferred 4 Year / Bachelors Degree in Math, Statistics, Business, Computer Science, or Data Science (equivalent experience may be substituted)

Years Of Experience

1-3 years of Data engineering experience preferred
