Masters Intern - Bioinformatics

Job Description
The Computational Biology group within the Environmental and Biological Sciences Directorate at PNNL-Battelle has a bioinformatics intern opening for candidates with strong expertise in statistics and statistical programming. The candidate will engage in project work that uses statistical analyses to solve complex applied problems across biology for various domain spaces, such as environmental systems, homeland security, and human health. The incumbent will assist in computational tool and statistical model development for several projects and be expected to work directly in interdisciplinary teams including chemists, biologists, bioinformaticians, computer scientists, data scientists and software developers. A successful candidate must be able to collaborate, identify scientific problems and opportunities, and implement computational solutions in a reproducible manner.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be matriculated/enrolled in a Master's program at an accredited college or university. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Qualifications, Skills, and/or Training Necessary for Position:
  • Pursuing a M.S. in biostatistics, bioinformatics, statistics, or related discipline.
  • Familiarity with experimental design, linear models, randomization, statistical learning algorithms and packages
  • Demonstrated capability with a statistical programming language (e.g. R, Python, etc).
  • Strong communication skills and enthusiasm for working individually and in an interdisciplinary team environment.
Preferred Education/Credential:
  • Experience in manipulating and analyzing large datasets and with visualization of complex data types.
  • Familiarity with R or Python package development and unit testing
