Electrical Engineering Intern
Tesla’s Battery Electronics (BE) team is hiring an Electrical Design Engineer with a superb ability to design PCBs for high voltage management and safety critical systems. As a member of the BE team, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design vertically integrated products and drive through full product design cycle to mass production (1M+/yr). You will contribute new technology ideas, design proof of concepts, support mass production, design for test, and work closely with component and layout engineering to create best-in-class BMS systems. The projects will include Tesla’s vehicle offerings (Model S/X and 3/Y) as well as energy storage products (Megapack and Powerwall) - anything Tesla makes with a battery you will have a hand in. You will work in a scrum team to solve new battery architectures and continually innovate in the exciting EV and energy industries.
Responsibilities
- End to end ownership from preliminary proposal to validated and deployed system: specification, architecture, simulation, schematic capture, PCB layout, board bring-up, board validation, and system validation
- Determined to continually improve designs and seek new ways to solve problems
- Design of common HV circuits to implement functions such as battery cell/module/pack voltage/current sense, HV switching, and galvanic isolation Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop specifications and help shape and create new Tesla battery products
- Create PCB and system prototypes and evaluate new design techniques through experimentation
- Support PCB bring-up through all phases of design
Requirements
- Education: BS or MS in Electrical Engineering
- Experience designing and bringing up complex electrical circuits
- Altium designer (or equivalent) experience: schematic, layout, component creation/library management
- SPICE or preferred circuit simulation tool
- Strong understanding of signal integrity and electromagnetic compatibility
- Strong understanding of analog and digital circuit design
- Exceptional troubleshooting and debug skills
- Strong desire to push the status quo and think outside of the box
- Strong desire to work in a lab with your hands (prototyping, soldering, building)
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with LI+ battery electronics, BMS design, battery safety systems, and high voltage power electronics design
- Python/Matlab or C/C++ programming experience
- Ability to write/modify/debug firmware, set up tool chains, and utilize hardware debugger tools
- PCBA rework skills
