Summer Soccer Scholars: Teaching Internship

South Bronx United uses soccer as a vehicle for social change, aiming to help youth build character, teamwork, and leadership skills so that they can succeed in high school, college, careers, their community and beyond. toward common positive goals.

Summer Soccer Scholars Interns will serve as assistant teachers and mentors in the SBU’s summer program which combines soccer and education to keep youth active and learning during the summer months. Mentors will work with students (grades 6-11) in the classroom for three classes daily, on the soccer field every afternoon for training and games, and on fun field trips every Friday.

All interns will be trained, supervised, and mentored by SBU Education Directors, with support from the Program Director, Social Worker, and Program Coordinator. All interns will attend a two-week crash-course in teaching and mentoring covering the basics of student engagement, classroom management, and community building.

This internship is UNPAID. A transportation stipend will be offered to offset subway fare costs. Interns will have the unique opportunity to gain classroom experience, helping develop curriculum and lessons, in a supervised setting. Throughout the summer, interns will receive in-class support, observations, and feedback.

Summer interns will directly serve youth ages 11-19 in a mentoring and teaching capacity. The interns will be assigned as the mentor for a specific grade-level cohort. They will serve as assistant teachers, to professional educators, for their cohort through three, one-hour class periods each day; Math, ELA, and Life Skills (Computer Science. Entrepreneurship, Journalism, etc.). Interns will have the chance to plan curriculum for and facilitate a high interest, morning elective class as well as community building activities throughout the summer. Interns interested will gain teaching experience under the supervision of experienced teachers and will be encouraged to take on

additional responsibilities of interest in designing the curriculum, lessons, and assessments for the course. All interns will work closely with the Education Directors to become effective educators and caring adult mentors.

Interns will also serve as mentors on the soccer field, during lunch and program transitions, and on weekly Friday field trips. They will support staff with student supervision at all times. No soccer background is necessary, but all interns will have daily on-field mentoring responsibilities and are required to stay for the full program day 8:30am-3:30pm. Interns will help student-athletes build strong social-emotional skills on the soccer field, through healthy competition and supportive coaching during all activities. During field trips, interns will be assigned small groups of

students to chaperone while they enjoy the field trip activities. Mentoring in the community includes modeling positive behavior for students that are representative of the SBU Values, ensuring timely arrival at designated meeting places for smooth trip departures, and actively engaging with students throughout transportation to and from field trips. Interns who have soccer experience will have the opportunity to take on more responsibilities as assistant soccer coaches during the afternoon training sessions and game days. Assistant coaches will receive instruction from the

SBU Director of Coaching.

Enthusiastic and caring with a specific interest in education and youth development. Teaching interns should have experience working with and mentoring youth ages 11-18, preferably in education settings. Teaching and classroom management experience is a plus, as well as knowledge of the South Bronx community. This internship is ideal for undergraduate or graduate students interested in pursuing a career in education and other youth-based fields. No soccer background required.
