ALCC Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Archeology Technician Overview:
This position is located in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, working with the Cultural Resources branch. As a unit of the National Park Service, Glen Canyon works to provide visitor access and enjoyment of the recreation area, while also managing and protecting natural and cultural resources.
The archeology technician will work with NPS cultural resources staff to document, protect, and manage cultural resources in the park unit. The position is based in Page, AZ at the park headquarters, and the technician will work across the recreation area, which spans 1.25 million acres in northern Arizona and southern Utah.
The technician will participate in completing archeological field surveys, recording archeology sites, completing site condition assessments, and conducting database management. The technician will gain an experience working across different areas of the park, including on the Colorado River, in riparian corridors, in canyon terrain, and on upland plateaus, and will learn about diverse archeological and historic features. The technician will also have the opportunity to learn about technical report writing, work with State Historic Preservation Office requirements, use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) to manage cultural resources, and other aspects of historic preservation and conservation on federal lands. In addition, there will be opportunities for professional development, such as participation in relevant training, interaction with agency staff and partners, and exposure to National Park Service processes and, reporting requirements.
Essential functions and responsibilities:
- Assist cultural resources staff to plan and complete archeological field work
- Participate in pedestrian survey, and find, document, and assess new archeological sites
- Prepare archeological site records, GIS maps, and photographic records
- Find and monitor existing sites and complete site updates and condition assessments
- Monitor projects that may impact archeological sites through ground disturbance
- Assist with cultural resource database management, including data entry, use of the Geographic Information System (GIS) for spatial data management, and use of NPS databases
- Complete written trip reports
- Periodic travel, overnight work, and non-traditional work hours, including weekends and/or evenings may occasionally be required

Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Archeology, Anthropology, or a directly related field along with at least 15 credit hours in archeology related coursework
- Completion of an archeological field school or similar level of volunteer/internship/work experience including field work experience of excavation and/or pedestrian survey
- Experience using a GPS in the field to collect spatial data
- Self-motivated and able to work independently after training
- Ability to work effectively on a team to complete projects
- Ability to work safely and productively in remote field settings, including under adverse conditions. This will include overnight camping or backpacking for multiple nights, hiking in rough terrain, and working in adverse weather.
- Ability to pass a Department of Interior background check is required
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
- Previous experience completing archeology field work in the Southwest US, and familiarity with prehistory and history of the Southwest
- Understanding of the ArcGIS geodatabase format, and ability to edit attribute data, edit meta data, and create maps using ArcGIS
- Interest in pursuing a career in archeology and/or National Park Service
