Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps’ Mission:
It is the mission of the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps to lead our Nations back to cultural and ecological well being. The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps is specifically designed to engage Native American youth and young adults with offices in Acoma, Albuquerque, Gallup, Zuni, and Hopi. Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps serves local tribal communities in the regions we operate. Indigenous applicants will be preferred.

The Heritage Resources Program supports the US Forest Service’s mission to care for the land and serve the people through relationship building with partners and public users, sustainable recreation, and active restoration of the National Forests and Grasslands of the Southwest. The Heritage Resources Program specifically advocates for material cultural resources, ethnographic resources, and areas of Tribal concern on US Forest Service lands, as well as upholds and adheres to laws and directives pertinent to Heritage Resources on federal public lands.
Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps - Heritage Resources Individual Placement (IP) Overview:
The goals of the two (2) Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps - Heritage Resources Individual Placements (IP) with exposure to the USFS Heritage and Recreation programs. The community of Salida is very passionate about our recreation and heritage programs and the Forest Service works closely with the community to improve access and experiences for visitors to the National Forest.
Vehicle-based dispersed camping is a popular and growing activity on the Salida Ranger Districts on the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands. The growing desire for public land use brings increased pressure on forest resources, an uptick in user conflicts, a rise in human-caused wildfires, and trespass on adjacent non-public lands. The USDA Forest Service seeks to manage vehicle-based dispersed camping on the Salida Ranger Districts to provide camping opportunities while minimizing the effects of this activity on natural resources, non-public lands, and other forest users.
These Individual Placements (IP's) will play a critical role in helping manage the cultural and historical resources on the Salida Ranger District. The IP's will focus on the high priority camping management plan and will be doing both vehicle and pedestrian survey work at popular dispersed campsites.
Essential functions and responsibilities:
The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps - Heritage Resources Individual Placement (IP) will oversee and implement the following tasks:
- Work with Camping Management Team members to survey and monitor cultural and historical resources that might be impacted from vehicle based dispersed camping.
- Working with heritage program staff, conducts field investigations as part of a Forest-wide classification and protection program to be incorporated in long-range resource management plans.
- Searches for and examines historical records as well as the findings of other archeological experts relative to the history, social structure, and living conditions of past cultures which inhabited the area.

- Defensive Driver Training
- Government Driver's License Training
- First Aid/CPR
- Invasive Species Identification
- Campsite Collector App training
Required Skills
- Knowledge of established methods and techniques for archeological field survey, recording historic and prehistoric cultural resources, and testing archeological sites.
- Ability to perform library and archival research and oral interviewing to locate and obtain information.
- Practical knowledge of the local geography, archeology, ethnography and history of the area within and adjacent to the Forest.
- Knowledge of technical report writing to prepare reports.
Required Experience
Archeology, History or Natural Resource Management degree or working towards this type of degree.
