Weston Preparatory Academy (WPA) is one of the top academic performing schools in Detroit. The staff works in collaborative grade level teams to provide high level instruction and high expectations to our 300, K-8 students. All of our technology rich classrooms include a Promethean board, a set of Activote clickers, a document camera and Chromebook for all students to support instruction. Teachers and students have subscriptions and access to various online learning platforms.
WPA is a neighborhood school, located on 10 picturesque acres in a safe, west side Detroit neighborhood. We value the partnership with our parents and neighborhood association. Bi-monthly events are held to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and nurture the relationships of our stakeholders.
The staff participates in focused professional development 12 days a year that directly relates to the Weston educational program. Professional development is embedded to support Wonders (Reading Program), 6 + 1 Traits (Writing Program), data driven instruction, Restorative Practices and CHAMPS (School wide PBS system). The Common Core aligned math curriculum includes a variety of research based resources such as Go Math, Compass Learning, Prentice Hall. In addition, new staff members participate in Weston University, a course taught by the school leaders, that provides an in-depth study of the school’s philosophies and all instructional programs.
