Community Engagement Internship (Year Long) - Savannah, GA

The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to local communities. This position will help revitalize a volunteer and outreach program that was dramatically effected by the recent pandemic.

Fort Pulaski National Monument is a premier destination in the Savannah area and is looking for the right CVA to help rebuild a program that is yearning to thrive. With the right energy and work ethic, this position will allow the CVA to create a wonderful atmosphere for our volunteers and themselves, as well as create a number of opportunities for people to interact and support the park.

Site Description: Fort Pulaski National Monument was established by Presidential Proclamation in 1924. The national monument, which sits between Savannah and Tybee Island on the Georgia coast, encompasses 5,623 acres on Cockspur and McQueen's Islands. Within this setting, the monument contains a broad range of significant resources that reflect both the natural and cultural history of Georgia. The volunteer program contributes to all departments of the park, with focus in facilities and visitor services. The park works with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds and receives support from one time services groups, local returning volunteers, as well as a cohort of RV volunteers that support the park for up to three to five months.

Position Responsibilities: Assist in the management of Fort Pulaski National Monument’s Volunteers-In-Parks Program • Recruit volunteers via volunteer.gov, social media posts, and community outreach • Interview, onboard, orient, and train new volunteers • Record monthly volunteer hours • Complete quarterly and annual reports • Organize and inventory volunteer program supplies • Plan, schedule, coordinate, manage logistics, and supervise national volunteer events (Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, National Trails Day, 9/11 Day of Service, National Public Lands Day) and park volunteer events such as Park Day Expand volunteer opportunities offered at Fort Pulaski National Monument • Complete a park-wide Volunteer Needs Assessment • Assist in the review and update of the park’s Volunteers-In-Parks Program Handbook • Complete handbooks for each individual volunteer position • Forge partnerships with diverse communities and recruit diverse volunteers • Forge partnerships with environmental groups and expand environment-based volunteer opportunities • Recruit youth groups to participate in group volunteer projects –Scouts, Schools, etc. • Recruit military groups to participate in group volunteer projects • Collaborate with Natural Resource Management to set up a Citizen Science volunteer program

CVA Minimum Requirements: • Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in fall/winter 2022/2023 • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident • Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old) • Willing and able to represent the NPS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group. • A personal vehicle is required as there is no public transportation available to and from the park. • Must be able to interact successfully with visitors from diverse backgrounds. • Must be willing to handle serving both indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Southern Georgia is hot and humid in summer. • Submit proof of a Driver’s License and undergo a Federal Background Check, upon selection • US Citizen, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States

Preferred Qualifications: • Local candidates are encouraged to apply. • Experience in public speaking, teaching, environmental or cultural education, or interpretation • Ability to work with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and otherO365 programs. • Some knowledge-or the willingness to quickly learn--the cultural and natural history of Fort Pulaski, including but not limited to the American Civil War and the history of the southeastern United States, especially the Georgia and the South Carolina coasts, as well as environmental factors including hurricanes and climate change. Additional Information: • Located near Savannah and Tybee Island • Opportunities to collaborate with other sites in the area • Participate in a variety of different programs including living history and artillery demonstration
