Community Volunteer Ambassador – Homestead National Historic Park

Position Details:

Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen
communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to local communities.
 
This Community Volunteer Ambassador position will work to nurture and expand relationships with potential organizations and volunteer partners within gateway communities. This position will also work to create meaningful opportunities to Homestead National Historical Park's expanding virtual team.


Site Description:

Homestead National Historical Park is dedicated to remembering the many legacies of the Homestead Act of 1862. The Act provided opportunities to women, laborers, immigrants, and formerly enslaved people. The Act also played a significant role in stripping Native American land, and efforts to undermine Native American culture. Homestead National Historical Park's volunteer team works to expand the voices included in the homesteading narrative. Homestead National Historical Park has a team of volunteers that work on site and a separate team of volunteers that work remotely to research and transcribe primary documents.


Position Responsibilities:

The CVA:
·       Will also focus on anchoring all volunteer opportunities to Volunteer.gov.
·       Prepare and scan materials for virtual transcription opportunities
·       Develop techniques to manage and track the growing virtual program
·       Will be given tasks related to engaging these identified organizations (serving historically marginalized communities). The CVA and will be given time to research and explore new collaborations and strategies of engagement.
·       Will assist the volunteer coordinator and other staff in planning volunteer opportunities for national stewardship days in addition to Park-specific events such as our annual prairie workday.
 

CVA Minimum Requirements:

·       Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in fall/winter 2022/2023
·       Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
·       Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old)
·       High school diploma or GED
·       Strong work ethic
·       Friendly
·       Submit proof of a Driver’s License and undergo a Federal Background Check, upon selection
·       US Citizen, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States

Additional Information:

Intern will be provided onsite park housing at no additional cost. Housing includes individual sleeping, a shared kitchen and living space. As many as 3 volunteers and/or interns may be staying in Park housing unit.
