Product Manager Intern (2023 Summer Intern Program)

The Watts Water Technologies family of companies designs and manufactures valves and drains and related products that promote the comfort and safety of people and the quality, conservation, and control of water used in commercial, residential, industrial, and municipal applications. The Watts Internship Program is strategically designed to allow you the opportunity to utilize what you have learned in the classroom while gaining a true understanding of the business world by applying those key principles through hands-on experience. During the internship, students will gain exposure to and impact operations. There will be many chances to network with like-minded manufacturing and industrial engineering professionals and stimulate your mind through cross-departmental collaboration.

What You’ll Do  

The Manufacturing/Production Engineering Intern will utilize technical expertise in assembly processes in conjunction with lean manufacturing tools to eliminate waste and improve productivity. You will have exposure to the following components:

  • Production- Making and Packaging
  • Quality
  • Health, Safety, and Environment

The internship will be approximately 13 weeks, and during your time with Watts, you will focus on the following:

  • Technical Operations and Product Testing – Provide daily engineering technical support for manufacturing operations that include, assembly, and valve testing
  • 3D Solid Modeling Software – Leverage software to design machinery, tools, and fixtures
  • Kaizens & Continuous Improvement – Participate in kaizen teams to improve quality, productivity, and safety
  • Statistical Process Control – Apply statistical methods to determine and improve process capability, repeatability, first-pass yields, and conformance to quality requirements
  • Quality Control & Change Management – Process Design Develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods, utilizing knowledge of product design, materials, processes, tooling, equipment capabilities, and quality control standards
  • Develop Control Plans – Work with the operations team to assist in the development and writing of quality and safety-driven process control plans and work instructions, including best practices
  • Loss and Waste Analysis – Identify, prioritize, analyze, and eliminate losses and inefficiencies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current student (sophomore, junior or senior status) actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering degree
  • Detail-oriented, strong willingness to learn, and ability to manage competing priorities
  • Possesses knowledge in mathematics, physics, statistics, and mechanics
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • General knowledge of Lean principles and understanding of different quality standards like six-sigma
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical systems

Physical and Mental Demands
While performing the duties, the employee will be working in an office environment with exposure to the plant floor as well as the Engineering Test Facility. The employee is required to sit, stand, walk, and use hands to handle objects and other tools. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The Employee may be required to lift, push, and/or pull up to 40 pounds.
