Brigham Education Institute’s Assistant Director for Educational Science & Initiatives

OVERVIEW:
The Assistant Director for Educational Science & Initiatives will have advanced training in education and be active in this field. The primary goal of this position is to strategically work to understand what standards or novel educational practices could be better activated within Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Assistant Director for Educational Science & Initiatives will ensure that core standards and best practices in medical and health professions education are known, specifically focused on our constituency, including the GME and UME educational worlds, shared with Brigham faculty and staff, and best operationalized (or initiated) with the purpose of improved teaching and learning throughout our system. Secondary goal includes responsibility for educational scholarship and research projects and other activities of the BEI.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Producing deliverable products (such as workshops or instructional programs, written or digital materials)
  • Writing summaries of best practices and new/novel educational efforts based on education science
  • Sharing or teaching these to our constituents  
  • Staying up to date on the current medical education literature
  • Engaging with other BEI faculty and staff on projects for publication
Other projects will include:
  • Other projects will include:
  • Produce multiple written education science deliverables annually (e.g. BEI Crowdsourced Ideas and Conclusions, BEI Training Guides, Top 10 MedEd articles, AAMC Updates, etc.)
  • Implement innovative educational initiatives (e.g. BEI Bundles, BEI Crowdsourced summaries, etc)
  • Synergize with other departments’ medical education programs and provide programming, teaching, or consultation on topics of expertise to faculty, staff, or trainees upon request
  • Explore and work in conjunction with Executive Director and Administrative Director, and other BEI faculty and staff in developing a medical education (e.g. FORE) program
  • Support multiple and develop at least two medical education workshops each year (total of 2 per year). May be asked to assist in leading a month "Last Page Challenge"
  • Other projects as requested (ie: IRB Med Ed Coaching)
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Master’s Degree or terminal degree in Education required; 2-3 years’ experience in an education development role in an Academic Medical Center, or similar environment, preferred.
  • Proficiency with medical education curriculum development & pedagogy, social media, personal computers and outstanding working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, required.
  • Ability to frequently collaborate with educators and administrators.
 
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:  
  • Attributes aligned with success for such a candidate include an ability to understand the practical side of healthcare and UME/GME/CME training as well as an ability to operationalize small and large initiatives that adapt to different training environments. Small but impactful initiatives can be as important as larger long-term efforts.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of professionals and trainees.
  • Skills with qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis
  • Takes initiative and functions effectively, both independently and as a member of a team. Needs to be very flexible as the academic environment requires the ability to adapt to new situations/requests.
  • Exceptional judgment and discretion in handling sensitive political and confidential issues.
  • Requires a high degree of social facility in obtaining cooperation and support from a broad range of people.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:      
The Assistant Director for Educational Science & Initiatives will be logistically stationed in the BEI Knowledge Center where they will serve as a resource to others, integrate as a part of the BEI team, and work on new initiatives.
The BEI Knowledge Center is a transparent office area and quiet workspace with up to 6-7 other staff located throughout center and walk-in constituents who sit in the center. Will be able to sit to work. May have to have meetings at other locations throughout the hospital and will need to walk to these locations. On days when there are programs to be presented will have to stand up to present.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
There will be no reports to this role, though other members of the BEI team will be in frequent contact to assist with program delivery and similar activities.
This position will report to the Executive Director of the BEI for oversight of content, project approval and direction, and execution of deliverables. They will separately report to the BEI Administrative director for integration with other BEI projects, understanding of timelines and for other administrative activities. 
 
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:   
Will work with administrative director if funds are necessary for any developing projects.
