Year Long National Park Service Internship with Housing: Gulf Islands National Seashore

Location: Pensacola Beach, FL Program Details: Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to local communities. Community Volunteer Ambassadors (CVAs) support Volunteer-in-Parks programs at National Park Service sites nationwide. This ranges from National Park, National Monuments, National Battlefields, National Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, and more. The Community Volunteer Ambassador Program was developed to support NPS sites in connecting with their local communities through service and to provide young adults with a professional development opportunity within the National Park Service. CVAs provide capacity for NPS sites to establish community partnerships, develop new volunteer opportunities, and build volunteer program resources. Site Information Gulf Islands National Seashore is the nation’s largest seashore stretching 160 miles along the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico in Florida and Mississippi. Each year, around 5 million guests are drawn to the park for its emerald coast waters, magnificent white beaches, fertile marshes, and historic landscapes. Volunteers play an important role in guest experiences, by providing orientation and interpretive information at park visitor centers, assisting guests staying in the campgrounds, cleaning park buildings, and picking up trash along the beaches. Volunteers also assist in natural resource management by monitoring sea turtle nests. The year-round volunteer program consists of 465 volunteers who provide 18,500 hours of service. Position Summary Join the Gulf Islands National Seashore team and assist with growing the capacity of the volunteer program in a sustainable, effective, and meaningful manner. The CVA will collaborate on projects to enhance the volunteer and outreach programs at the park, while developing critical skills necessary for their future career success. Position Responsibilities: CVA's responsibilities include: • Assist with large volunteer service days and outreach events • Assist with volunteer program administrative duties • Respond to potential volunteer inquiries for information • Research and suggest strategies to improve volunteer retention • Identify and create new volunteer positions and projects within the park CVA Minimum Requirements: • Customer service • Excellent research and writing stills • Strong communication abilities • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite • Time management Updated 5/9/2022 • Critical thinking skills • Taking initiative • Personable, kind, and hardworking • Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in early April 2023 • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident • Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old) • High School Diploma/GED • Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check - Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position. • Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks. • Have reliable form of transportation. Preferred Qualifications • Experience engaging the general public • Public speaking • Completion of a post-secondary education program (2 to 4 years) • Interested in learning about the National Park Service and career opportunities Benefits: • CVA will receive a weekly stipend of $500 (additional $65/week, if housing is not provided) • Limited health care/childcare benefits • The position is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award $6,495.00 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of the program • Professional development funds • Networking opportunities within the National Park Service and partnering organizations • Public Land Corps Hiring Authority • Week-long in-person training at NPS site with travel/meal expenses covered.
