Year Long National Park Service Internship: Mill Spring Battlefield National Monument

Location: Nancy, KY Program Details: Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to local communities. Community Volunteer Ambassadors (CVAs) support Volunteer-in-Parks programs at National Park Service sites nationwide. This ranges from National Park, National Monuments, National Battlefields, National Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, and more. The Community Volunteer Ambassador Program was developed to support NPS sites in connecting with their local communities through service and to provide young adults with a professional development opportunity within the National Park Service. CVAs provide capacity for NPS sites to establish community partnerships, develop new volunteer opportunities, and build volunteer program resources. Site Information Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument is a new park, just 2 years old. The battle that occurred here is considered to be the first major victory for the US in the Western arena of the Civil War. During our second (this) year, we held several volunteer clean up days to engage the community and introduce them to the NPS and the Mill Springs Battlefield. The park's VIP handbook is almost complete. With this tool, the park with the help of the CVA intern will start recruiting and training our first volunteers to work on a regular basis, and continue to host one-day volunteer events. Position Summary This is a unique opportunity to work at a new NPS site during its early years. The intern will work closely with the park team which consists of 8 people. The intern will make a difference by connecting the surrounding communities with the park while learning how a national park site operates. The intern will organize and manage volunteer events; park staff will provide assistance. Intern will plan and participate in activities and events to increase the community connection/engagement to the park. Additionally, the intern will be able to develop skills in the areas of working with park visitors, public speaking, and writing. Position Responsibilities: CVA's responsibilities include: • Research and learn the story of the park • Work with park staff to plan onsite and offsite volunteer events, activities, and community outreach opportunities • Assist with recruiting volunteers • Provide community programs in the park for audiences of all ages and backgrounds • Learn about park operations, by working alongside NPS employees, occasionally presenting talks and assisting in visitor center operations. CVA Minimum Requirements: • Ability to collaborate as a member of a team • Outgoing and friendly Updated 5/9/2022 • Dependable • Good work ethic • Positive attitude • Organized • Motivated • Ability to work independently • Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in early April 2023 • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident • Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old) • High School Diploma/GED • Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks. • Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check - Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position. Preferred Qualifications • Love of history • Effective communication skills • Good writing skills • Experience in working with the public • Experience in doing historical research Benefits: • CVA will receive a weekly stipend of $500 (additional $65/week, if housing is not provided) • Limited health care/childcare benefits • The position is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award $6,495.00 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of the program • Professional development funds • Networking opportunities within the National Park Service and partnering organizations • Public Land Corps Hiring Authority • Week-long in-person training at NPS site with travel/meal expenses covered. Additional Information • Schedule may include weekend work. Park will work with intern to establish work week. • Work hours are generally 8:30 am - 5 pm. • Require driver’s license park and personal transportation (i.e., car). Park is in rural southern, central Kentucky where there is no public transportation available. • Pass federal background check. • Park does not have housing. Very limited options in the community for temporary housing or rental properties.
