Business Intern- Richmond

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is currently searching for students to join our Business Internship Program in multiple areas and locations throughout the state. VDOT’s Internship Program gives Interns exposure to the diverse types of work the Department performs and prepares them for a future career in transportation. This program also gives Interns hands-on job assignments and the opportunity to work closely with a diverse group of professionals, with structured training opportunities that align with VDOTs current and projected workforce needs.

Summer Work Experience
Interns spend the summer working on unique projects and activities. In addition, interns will have the opportunity to network with other interns. VDOT is seeking students majoring in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Information Technology, Communications, Data Science and other business related areas. We are seeking candidates with strong analytical skills, interpersonal and presentation skills, customer service, time management and organizational skills.

The Location:
The Central Office is the Headquarters for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Located in the City of Richmond, the Central Office is where the Commissioner’s Office and over 30 engineering, maintenance, operations and business support divisions are located. These divisions include the Administrative Services, Structure and Bridge, Communications, Business Integrated Solutions, Performance Transformation, Environmental, Civil Rights, Budget and Funds Management, Fiscal, Human Resources, Assurance and Compliance, Location and Design, Materials, Research Council, Right of Way, Transportation Planning, Information Technology, Traffic Engineering, Governance and Legislative Affairs, Construction, Operations, Local Assistance, Public Private Partnerships, Procurement, Information Technology, Safety and Security, Strategic Innovation, among others. Note that the Research Council although attached to the Central Office is located in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Hiring Range applies to both undergraduate and graduate candidates.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Be a US citizen or permanent US resident.
  • Be at least 18 years of age by the start of their employment/internship.
  • As of May 2023, be a rising sophomore (2nd year), junior (3rd year) or senior (4th year) enrolled in undergraduate study in a two-year or four year college/university.
  • Graduate students are eligible to apply.
  • Possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale for undergraduate students or 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale for graduate student applicants.
  • Complete a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students and 9 credit hours per semester for graduate students. Students must be enrolled full-time at the time of application.

Preferred Qualifications
Successful candidates will have demonstrated academic excellence in their major program and be motivated, customer focused and action-oriented individuals with a drive for learning on the job and achieving results. You will have demonstrated ability to make quality and timely decisions, take initiative, communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, prioritize and organize multiple demands in a continuously changing environment, use a computer and software applications, and can meet established deadlines. Ability to anticipate problems, provide solutions, follow instructions, learn quickly and collaborate with teammates.

Special Requirements
  • Selected candidates will start their internship at the beginning of June 2023 and work until August 2023.
  • Based on interest, business need, and available funding, students may have the opportunity to continue working during the academic year.
  • A resume and an unofficial transcript reflecting the required cumulative GPA and proof of enrollment in college or university must be submitted via the online application process.
  • A secure electronic or sealed official transcript will be required if the candidate is selected for employment.
  • Students who are transferring from a community college to a college or university for their junior year (3rd year) should provide their final community college transcript and their letter of acceptance to their new institution as an attachment to their application.
  • Some Intern positions may require unrestricted mobility in irregular terrain, work in an outdoor environment, and the ability to lift, bend and stand for long periods of time.
  • Assignments may include requirements to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety vest, safety boots, etc.) and the ability to work from heights (may include requirements to wear fall protection equipment).
  • This is a part-time hourly position – No state benefits will be offered.
  • Housing and relocation are not provided.
  • This position does not offer sponsorship.
  • This position requires a fingerprint based criminal history background check and a Motor Vehicle Driving record check.
