Modeling and Simulation, Reactor Core Design, and Nuclear Engineering Internship - Summer 2023

Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.
Job Summary
Kairos Power is seeking highly motivated early career individuals to join Modeling and Simulation and Reactor Core Design teams this coming summer 2023 that focuses on building the tools, infrastructures, and analysis methods for the safety case of the Hermes Reactor and KP-X. Contributions from each team is instrumental to Kairos Power's mission on delivering an innovative technology that will impact climate change. 
Departments/Functions with internship opportunities: 
  • Reactor Core Design (Radiation Transport and Shielding Design, Radiation Detection, Reactor Physics (Neutronics and Thermal Hydraulics), and Fuel Cycle Analysis) 
  • Thermal and Safety Methods and KP-SAM Code Development
  • Fuel Performance - KP-BISON 
  • Source Term Modeling Development
  • Structural Materials Analysis
  • Computational Fluid Dynamic Methods and Analysis 
  • Nuclear Critical/Safety Analysis
  • Overall Analysis support such as Piping and Layout Analysis and Thermal Design and Rapid Technology Development Analysis 
Qualifications
  • Current student pursuing Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering Science, Chemical Engineering or related field 
  • Application of technical skills outside of classroom setting (i.e. laboratory, research, extracurricular projects, personal projects, or prior internship or work experience) is preferred
  • Proven team player with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Self-starter, critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and manage competing priorities
  • Ability to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment, including frequent interactions with cross-functional teams 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office application (e.g. Outlook, Excel, Word) and other software systems
