UCLA Health Undergraduate Student Summer Internship

The UCLA Health Undergraduate Summer Student Summer Internship program is an exciting 10 week summer program designed to provide exposure to professional careers in healthcare, obtain work experience and develop work habits and communication skills that can be helpful in shaping future career interests. You will participate in a variety of professional and learning experiences, including but not limited to:
  • Projects scoped and identified by respective department (serving in a variety of roles)
  • Department and team-based projects
  • Experiential learning, shadowing, and tours

Beyond contributions to individual projects and collaborating with the preceptor, you will also contribute to the Undergraduate Student Summer Intern cohort’s culture and sense of community through active participation, engagement, and fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.

Real Estate | Planning, Design & Construction

Preceptor: Megan Van Ness – Administrative & Financial Manager
Overview:
The the undergraduate student summer intern will report to the Financial Manager of Real Estate | Planning, Design & Construction. Shadowing opportunities include rounding issues at UCLA Health owned properties (both hospitals and medical office buildings), assisting with furniture installations/moves, processing purchase orders/invoices, generating ad hoc reports, and developing weekly meeting agendas for the HCAI Compliance Officer. Potential projects include:
– Researching and collecting data on a Construction Project Management topic of interns choice
– Analyze findings and present to office with recommendations for process improvements or next steps

Office of Environmental Health & Safety

Overview:
The Office of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) provides consultation and training services, develops and monitors safety programs and procedures and responds to health and safety service requests. In addition, the Office of Environmental Health & Safety ensures compliance with applicable federal, state and local health and safety and environmental regulations and standards. EH&S has oversight responsibility for fire and life safety, hazardous materials use and disposal, general safety and ergonomics, environmental compliance and supports Emergency Management, Utilities and Security related activities. Potential Projects include:
– Revamping of Hazardous Materials, Fire Safety, Injury Prevention and Respiratory Protection programs. This will consist of program development, policy revision, client engagement initiatives and related administrative work
– Participation in drills, trainings and shadowing all divisions and department administration

Communications

Overview:
The UCLA Health Communications department promotes news and information from the UCLA Hospital System and David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. The team of professional strategic communicators, media relations officers, issues managers, writers, editors, videographers, and photographers, is responsible for producing all internal and external communications. An undergraduate summer intern would have the following opportunities in the UCLA Health Communications department:
– Learn how to research, write, edit and promote original content related to health care and medical/science topics.
– Learn best practices for communicating with a large internal workforce (33,000 faculty and staff at UCLA Health) and a diverse external audience that includes patients, caregivers, donors, local and state government officials, and peers in academic medicine.

Technical Service Delivery Endpoint Refresh

Overview:
The Technical Service Delivery Endpoint Refresh team conducts refreshes of computers and printers at our Inpatient areas and Ambulatory clinics. This includes capturing current inventory of the areas, reviewing endpoints qualified for a refresh with managers and scheduling the refresh. Once refresh has been completed, the team will update our endpoint management system to ensure old endpoint is decommissioned and new endpoint is entered. The undergraduate student intern will also be exposed with providing updates on our metrics and dashboards, assisting our coordinators with documentation and communication, and can also assist with refreshes as needed.

Office of Health Informatics and Analytics

Overview:
The Office of Health Informatics and Analytics (OHIA) serves the data and analytics needs of UCLA Health across the Hospital, Faculty Practice Group and David Geffen School of Medicine. OHIA’s offerings include clinical, financial and quality reporting and analytics, on-demand reporting, self-service reporting, advanced analytics through Big Data solutions and platforms, data extracts, data governance, data integration, data management, data architecture, application integration, and web service integration.

Mobile Device Team

Overview:
The UCLA Health IT Mobile Device Team manages mobile devices and users for the Enterprise, which includes Hospital, DGSOM, FPG and Campus using UCLA’s MDM Software, troubleshooting mobile devices associated to hardware and MDM software, procuring and managing mobile devices for the enterprise, and supporting various device platforms, such as, but not limited to iOS, Android and Windows. We at the Mobile Device Team handle many high profile projects like upgrading iPhones, swapping out physical pagers with paging apps on iPhones as well as providing iPhones to the incoming House Staff/Residents/Attendings.

CICARE Service Excellence

Overview:
The CICARE Service Excellence Department oversees and reinforces the practice of CICARE and recognition across the health system. Projects include the CICARE Refresh, supporting CICARE rounds (patient and staff rounds), and planning recognition activities. The undergraduate student intern would assist with SWOT Recognitions, CICARE Round recognitions, distribution of recognition gifts such as logo merchandise and Dodger tickets, assist with e-thank you card program and positive comment report. The intern can support program managers in the department with Health Center Week planning and activities. The intern will also be needed to support data entry for new customer relations management department tool.

IT Business Operations

Overview:
UCLA Health IT Business Operations team consists of four areas: Acquisitions and Logistics, Finance, People Operations, and Space Planning. We are a professional, customer-focused group dedicated to providing support for all UCLA Health. Our goal is to remove administrative burdens and obstacles and promote best practices and create solutions for all our clients and partners. General activities include research, inputting, tracking and centralizing data and information, admin support, business writing, process improvement, serving as student intern liaison. Potential projects include:
– Supporting the HR and Logistics Team with tracking UHIT open positions posted on the UCLA Health Careers website, correlated administrative support, excel data input, and process improvement. This includes HR metrics and building out business requirements.
– Supporting the Employee Experience team with research, writing, business analysis, administrative support and tasks related to serving as the student intern liaison which includes providing support to high school summer programs

Information Services & Solutions – Virtualization Platform Service

Overview:
The Information Services & Solutions (ISS) Virtualization Platform Services provide technical support for various hypervisors such as ESX VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V and hosting hardware platforms such as HP, CISCO UCS, Nutanix, and IBM x86 to support the UCLA EPIC Electronic Medical Record system and Enterprise services. We plan, design, and build infrastructure solutions of medium to high complexity to meet the requirements given by the stakeholders to ensure security, stability, and business continuity. Currently, we are hosting over 5000 VMs in our environment, which consists of Windows and Linux servers. The intern will have an opportunity to learn hosting technologies, VMware, MS Hyper-V, and clouds. Hardware platform:
– Hyper-converged hardware platform – Nutanix
– Converged hardware platform – Cisco UCS

Salary Range: $16.25-$45.00 Hourly

Qualifications
  • Must be a current undergraduate student or a graduating high school senior and enrolled in an undergraduate program
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Writing and editing skills to prepare grammatically routine business correspondences, such as informal letters, memoranda, and notification letters
  • Computer proficiency and knowledge of on-line processing, web page editing, and a variety of programs, such as Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Excellent prioritization skills to complete work in a timely manner despite changes in workload or assignment, pressure of deadlines, or competing requirements.
