Seed Corn Production Intern

As an intern, you will be responsible for designing experiments, field and lab preparation, routine maintenance, and data analysis. You will be provided the opportunity of being exposed to research activities, allowing you to apply academic background and ultimately be exposed to both Production & Supply and Research & Development at Syngenta.

Job Description

 

You Will:

  • Support Agronomists and Field Production Technicians in field related activities as directed at the Rock Falls, IL production area
  • Capture pesticide application information to meet Worker Protection Standard safety requirements
  • Participate in accurate and timely crop scouting and data collection of emergence and vegetative growth stages, silk and pollen shed notes, stand counts, and IPM scouting thresholds
  • Perform activities related to planting, mapping, scouting, weed and insect management, rouging, detasseling, safety, training, and reporting at the site
  • Perform a project to study a potential production improvement.  Present findings to the local leadership team
  • Perform other duties as required to meet field operation or plant needs

 

Qualifications

 

Education & Experience:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree in an applicable discipline (Agronomy, Ag Business or Ag Studies majors preferred)
  • Fluent in English
  • Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions including seasonally hot or cold temperatures and inclement weather

Preferred Requirements:

  • Prior experience relating to agronomy is preferred but not required
  • Prior experience relating to Seed Production is strongly preferred but not required
  • Excellent communication skills to work well with co-workers on plant tasks and in field production management with farmer growers
  • Independent, self-motivated and need little supervision
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiencies in both Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
  • Good writing and math skills
  • Trusted - Will need to make good sound judgment calls in regards to seed quality management that will be for the best interest of the company
  • Innovative - To always look to implement new procedures or technologies to improve work efficiencies
  • Detail/Accuracy Oriented - All procedures and policies must be understood and followed. Data entry into data management systems must be accurate due to decisions being made by other departments based on the information given
