Higher Education Government Relations Intern

ntern position will be for the fall semester: September to December 2024

Position Overview:
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Higher Education Government Relations Intern to join our team. The successful candidate will assist in advocating for our organization’s interests within government bodies and fostering relationships with stakeholders in the higher education sector. This internship offers valuable hands-on experience in government relations, public policy, external affairs and higher education advocacy.

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Creating Email Lists: Compile and manage email distribution lists for communications with key stakeholders, including government officials, higher education institutions, policy experts and advocacy groups.
  • Attending Internal and External Meetings: Participate in internal strategy sessions and external meetings with government officials, higher education representatives, and partner organizations. Take detailed notes and assist in follow-up actions as necessary.
  • Prepping Background Documents: Research and prepare background documents, briefing materials, and presentations for meetings, events, and advocacy efforts. Ensure accuracy and relevance of information provided.
  • Event Planning: Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of events, such as policy briefings, roundtable discussions, and advocacy campaigns related to higher education initiatives. This may involve logistical support, communication with participants, and on-site assistance during events.
  • Other duties as assigned by VP and Associate AVP of Government Relations.


Qualifications:

 

  • Currently enrolled in a higher education program (undergraduate or graduate) with a focus on political science, public policy, international relations, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple deadlines effectively.
  • Demonstrated interest in government relations, public relations, or public policy, particularly within the higher education sector.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with online research tools and databases.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating initiative and a willingness to learn.
