BACKGROUND:

Our Resource Pool Nurse Internship Program provides exceptional didactic and clinical experiences set to build on the skills learned in Nursing School and prepare you for your career as a Registered Nurse! Our Resource Pool Nurse Internship Program is designed with flexible scheduling in mind to work alongside your collegiate education. We KNOW Nursing School is HARD and we’re here to help - not overwhelm!

Our Nurse Interns receive hands-on, on-the-job training at the bedside working alongside our amazing Registered Nurses in all patient care areas, including: Med/Surg • Med/Surg Tele • Progressive/Intermediate Care Burn Intensive Care Unit • Neuro Intensive Care Unit Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit • Emergency Department

In addition, our Nurse Interns receive a variety of Shadow Experiences across our hospital! Here at Columbia St. Mary’s Milwaukee, we believe these shadow experiences help to bridge the gap between specialties, multidisciplinary teams, and bedside care providers. They paint a bigger picture of all the work that goes into caring for our patients. Shadow Experiences for Nurse Interns include: Perioperative Services • Staffing • Bed Management Administrative Supervisors • Rehabilitation Services (PT/OT/SLP) Case Management • Respiratory Therapy • Wound Care Bariatric Services • Testing and Treatment • Pharmacy Laboratory • Patient Transfer Center • Labor and Delivery Mom/Baby • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit • Rapid Response

Our goal is to train our own! Our objective for our Nurse Interns is that they will be fitted with a Registered Nurse position that fits them once they pass the NCLEX and obtain licensure!

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of a nurse, provide direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization.

  • Complete assigned nursing orders as directed by preceptor, including assisting patients with activities of daily living and taking vital signs.
  • Observe patient status and responses. Document and report observations to preceptor or other appropriate staff.
  • Assist preceptor with development of care plan by reporting test results and patient observations.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned, including environmental services and preparing/transporting patients for diagnostic services.

Requirements

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

  • BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.

Education:

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Must be accepted or enrolled into a Nursing program upon date of hire/transfer and begin classes within 90 days of date of hire/transfer required.
