Summer Scholar Student

June - August 2017 • Fort Lauderdale, FL

What I liked

I got to see surgeries, follow various healthcare professionals (doctors, residents, nurses, pharmacists, etc.), and learn what it actually means to be a doctor! I learned a lot and really valued my experience there. It taught me firsthand the challenges and benefits of my future career.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been longer! And that I could have been able to do more rotations in different departments.

Advice

This experience is really what you make of it! Come early, ask questions, write everything you can down. Just be engaged and you're experience will be so much better! The healthcare professionals are more than happy to answer your questions and to show you cool things, but the more they see you're actually interested in what they're trying to teach you, the more they'll be willing to include you in!

Healthcare Management

September - December 2018 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

What I wish was different

I wish they gave an opportunity for the internship t be paid, because while the experience is very awarding its a full time commitment. This means there's not much time for other priorities, and budgeting becomes tight.

Advice

You get what you put in, don't ever be scared or timid about asking to do or try something. Everyone there is there to be a resource to you.

Student nurse extern

June - August 2019 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

I was able to work directly with the nurses to provide care for patients. I learned what it's like to be a nurse and practice skills. The hospital is very friendly and feels like home.

What I wish was different

The externship was perfect. The only thing I would change would be changing my unit placement to my first choice.

Advice

Working as a student nurse or as an extern is basically like having an interview each shift. There are people watching you to see if they want to hire you as a new graduate. Make a good impression and make sure that the unit is what you desire. Take the initiative and learn everything you can.

Research Intern

July - September 2018 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I loved getting to experience working in a hospital. Even though I was doing research I was among doctors and nurses everyday and the culture was super cool. My boss was a great mentor and I learned so much from him. All of the researchers in Lerner help each other out and collaborate throughout the day even though they busy working on their own projects.

What I wish was different

I wish i was able to stay for longer so that I could continue the project I was working on.

Advice

You can truly do anything you set your mind do. At the beginning of my time there I was pretty nervous that the tasks given to me would be too difficult, but I worked my way through everything and actually surprised myself.

What I liked

It was a small lab so I got to be involved in a lot of high tier work that most undergraduates may not have.

What I wish was different
