What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help or say that you don't know something. It's an internship -- people will never assume you're an expert and are there to help guide and teach you.

Corporate Finance Intern

I enjoyed the work. I completed a lot of work in excel and got to see direct mergers and acquisitions. I also got to sit in on meetings of managing directors to see how they operate with clients.

What I wish was different

I wish it wasn't virtual and I had the opportunity to connect more with my coworkers.

Management Consulting Intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The group I interned with was so welcoming, and they were very invested in my success. I learned so much, and I felt like I was able to work on projects that I was interested in. Also, even in the pandemic, they maintained the entire 10-week internship, and they adapted it to be online. I cannot speak highly enough of the group I was with.

What I wish was different

Advice

Take advantage of the opportunities they give you, and network a lot. FTI emphasizes that the internship is a two-way interview, and that made me nervous at first because I was ready to put my head down and just do my work. You should try to strike a balance of doing good work that's asked of you, and also expressing your own goals to show your individuality. It's much more personal than the actual work products you put out.

Financial Consulting Intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed the people I worked with and the projects I was able to do during the summer. They try to give interns a good idea on what it is like to work there full-time by having you work with clients too. I enjoyed being able to contribute to the team and learn a lot about the company through engaging projects.

What I wish was different

My internship was virtual due to the pandemic and I really would have enjoyed working within the office. Even given the situation, I was constantly communicating with other employees and interns so it didn't feel isolating at all!

Advice

Always reach out to other members of the firm to get to know about their experience and learn more about the company. It's a great way to network and show you care!

What I liked

FTI Consulting is a great company with really amazing people. Overall, the Strat Comms division was excited to welcome new interns and the team I was apart of was welcoming and happy to help with any learning curves. Ultimately, as an intern they want you to come in and learn - whether that be from grabbing coffee to actually doing the work.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more direction for the summer intern project.

Advice

Reach out to people if you're curious about what they do! Raise your hand for everything.

Intern

June - August 2018 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I liked how the work that I was a part of was actually meaningful. I got to be on site at a client much of the summer and it was also great to see how the client serving process works.

What I wish was different

I wish that my training included a little bit more of a focus on developing technical skills, especially those necessary to succeed during the internship like excel and PowerPoint.

Advice

Always have an open mind about the work, and as much as possible listen to conversations involving more senior members of the company! You can learn a lot from them and they want to see you succeed.

Analyst (Management Consulting)

May - August 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I loved the challenge behind learning all things Corporate Finance Consulting which, as an Industrial Engineer, was not in the slightest bit easy. It was great working with a highly motivated and fun team of young professionals who were willing to help every step of the way. I really got to understand what it means to be a consultant and even got a taste of traveling for work.

What I wish was different

I definitely wish that the training and on boarding process was a little more thorough. In a consulting envirornment with all consultants working on the client site and out of the office, it is very difficult to understand the tasks at hand and execute projects you have never been exposed to before. Nonetheless, it is an amazing experience becuase you learn to adapt to new surroundings, new expectations, and new roles. By the end of the internship, you'll realize how far you've come over a period of 10 weeks.

Advice

I would definitely advise anyone getting into a similar role to be fearless and face objectives head on. It may be daunting at first, it may take a lot of work and a lot of hours to learn new skills, but in the end you will come out much more refined and skilled. The biggest skill I learned this summer was "learning how to learn." You need to be willing to open a book, an article, a PDF and learn anything and everything you can about any given topic. That's a skill I'd highly recommend for anyone reading this review.

What I wish was different

nothing!

Towards the end, I was working 50-60 hours a week. This is part of consulting so know your industry before you begin to apply for internships.

What I liked

The people were very nice and there were a lot of intern events that allowed me to meet the rest of the office.

What I wish was different

Lender Services Intern

May - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I enjoyed the project turnover as I was working on something new every two weeks. They gave me a ton of independence as an intern so I learned a lot. We worked with clients from all different industries which also broadened my knowledge. I also really enjoyed getting to travel.

What I wish was different

The projects were a little repetitive and had a "plug and chug" structure at times. I wish they required more problem solving.

Advice

My advice would be to keep an open mind. There were a few things I was not sure if I liked about the job but so many aspects that made me love it.

Forensic and Litigation Consulting Intern

June - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I was able to work on a variety of work with different people at all levels in my group. The people were very open and honest and willing to help me learn. The work was exciting and valuable, and I was able to see how my work contributed to the end project.

What I wish was different

There were some down times when there wasn't a lot of work to do, but there were plenty of learning resources to prepare for when work was handed my way.

Advice

Be open to any work and any opportunities to learn, meet as many people as possible in all business segments.
