Goldman Sachs

Human Capital Management Intern

May - August 2018 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to network with extremely intelligent, motivated, and qualified employees. I enjoyed working on projects with full-time employees that have a meaningful impact on the future of the firm. The mentoring was wonderful and I am excited to have received a full-time offer. Compensation was very competitive.

What I wish was different

I wish it could have been longer.

Advice

Working at a large firm that knows what they are doing is extremely beneficial. UVU students shouldn't be scared to apply to competitive internships. I believe a key factor in obtaining the internship was my course work and my previous internship.

Private Wealth Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

Exposure to various different investments, access to the firm's broad resources

What I wish was different

I wish there wasn't a 12 hour limit for hours in the office (it's a loose limit). There is a huge benefit to having more time to further learn the company's resources and complete tasks more fully.

Advice

It is a great internship if you are interested in finance but don't know what exactly you want to do.

Advice

One should take their time at the beginning of their internship to adjust.

HCM Summer Analyst

May - August 2017 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I liked that I was given a good mix of freedom and required assignments. I had 5 projects that were assigned and had to dedicate some time to those but the way I spent the rest of my time was up to me.

What I wish was different

I wish we would have had more intern community events.

Advice

Meet as many people and have meaningful conversations with them and go to every event (speaker series, fun event, etc.). Have the mindset of not wanting to regret not attending something.

Operations Intern

May - August 2017 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

Good experience

What I wish was different

Terrible hours, responsibility of a full time employee from day one that includes the danger of messing something up, and completely monotonous tasks day in and day out.

Advice

If you aren’t about a 55-60 work week, boring daily tasks, and excruciatingly boring meetings for interns looks somewhere else.

What I liked

It was a great learning experience and did not require any background in finance.

What I wish was different

I wish the program was longer and was not a rotational system, so that I could spend more time with one group.

Advice

I would try to get a good understanding of all the groups in the firm as soon as possible; it will be helpful when you have to pick a group to try to return full time with.

Asset Management

June - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I was able to partake in a rotational program that gave me an amazing experience working with different groups, fields, and career paths all within one single firm.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to set more time aside to meet with more people that I was not directly working with.

Advice

It is vital to excel in the specific tasks given to you as an intern, but take it as an opportunity to really get to know those who are working there full time to see if it is a place, not just a company, that you would want to work in the future.

Intern

May - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed the atmosphere. GS is filled with people who have incredibly high expectations and expect excellence, but are also real people and understand that as an intern, you are just learning. Also, it is an incredibly flat organization where interns are encouraged to set up meetings with those higher than them to learn about the business.

What I wish was different

Advice

Push yourself out of your comfort zone immediately and always say yes to new experiences. Obviously reading your audience and time management is incredibly important, but it is arguably more important to make connections and make sure people remember you then it would be to get enough sleep every night.
