Goldman Sachs

Investment Banking Summer Analyst

June - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the nature of the work and the deals that I got to work on. The people I worked with were great and invested in my training and learning. I also was in a group that was fairly social and overall enjoyed my experience!

What I wish was different

I wish that the hours were more reasonable, and that the way people gave me work would be more purposeful and efficient sometimes. There were times I had to redo work because my associate and VP wanted different things, and the MD wanted something else.

Advice

It's important to approach everything with a positive attitude and learn as much as possible during your internship.

What I liked

We didn't just have useless intern projects, we actually did work that full time members did when we weren't there, so it really felt like we had an important roll to play at the firm. Also, we were able to have catch-ups with anyone that we wanted to talk to (barring those whose schedules were very full). I really liked how we were encouraged to talk to anyone and everyone about their roles, and we were able to make suggestions about their work. They really have a flat culture, and you get to work with some of the smartest and most interesting people I have ever met.

What I wish was different

I didn't exactly love the work I was doing, Also, this isn't a 9-5 job and they pay you salary not hourly, which is different from most internships. I also wish I got more choice in which team we got placed on, they kind of just told us what team was giving us an offer and matched us themselves.

Advice

I really had a great time! If you really want to work at the firm some of the best ways to gain exposure would be to attend one of their exploratory programs as they recruit from those programs for internships. Also, don't be concerned about not knowing anything about finance - I didn't know any finance at all going in. They really do like to hire students from all majors, so don't be concerned at all!
