LG&E and KU Energy

Engineering/Coop Intern I

January 2022 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

I really enjoy working for this company. The work is enjoyable and I have learned a lot working in the Power Transmission department. I really enjoy the company culture and everyone that I work with is very friendly and supportive. I also enjoyed the ability to work remote from my home throughout the spring and summer, although I switched to a hybrid model this fall where I am slotted to go into the office three days a week.

What I wish was different

The hardest part about this job was the drive down to the office. This was self inflicted though as I live in Northern Kentucky and did not want to live down in Louisville when there was no necessity to go into the office every day. My company did offer a housing stipend which I used to pay for my gas driving down there.

Advice

Ask lots of questions when you start out the process. People who are working over you are going to love this in general and will be eager to help explain things. As you go on though, try to work for a bit on an issue that confuses you and use your critical thinking before you rush to ask for help. I have found that doing this has enabled me to figure things out before I have to ask someone a question.

What I liked

I liked how my department gave me the responsibility of completing my own personal tasks, rather than merely sitting back and watching how everything was done by them.

IT Engineer Intern

May 2017 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

Having an internship at LG&E and KU Energy has allowed me to expand my knowledge outside of the classroom, that is not limited to technical knowledge. The technical work has grown on and exceeded what I have learned in classes. Thankfully, everyone has been more than happy to explain how something works if asked. While I have learned a considerable amount from the company about technical work and procedures, I have also been encouraged to grow personally. This has given me the courage and ability to take advantage of opportunities that previously I wouldn't have been able to.
