Oshkosh Corporation

Digital Technology Rotational Intern

May 2020 • Oshkosh, WI

What I liked

The rotational experience offers great hands-on learning from four different rotations within Oshkosh Corporations IT teams. These included Digital Manufacturing, Enterprise Architecture, Platform Services Engineering, and Data Analytics. You are given projects on each rotation and have 6 months to demonstrate what you learned and what experience it gave you to executive leadership. Overall, I would recommend this kind of experience to anyone in IT. Being able to rotate and find out what you like doing best to least is a great introduction to corporate IT.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have adopted the mindset of being your own boss sooner. When you start out, they tell you about the projects you will be working on, and later on, it becomes clear you are the brains behind your project. I did not realize they would treat interns like employees, hence, I would have researched more about the projects I was on rather than be under the impression that someone will guide me through steps.

Advice

You need to have a high level of motivation and willingness to learn. It is not a standard 9-5 where you will just be told what to do. The deliverables you create will reflect your efforts, and having to present in front of Chief Executive officers is one of the most fearful but rewarding experiences. Know that you will have stress, and projects may slow down, but being consistent and improving your communication skills will help immensely.

Advice

My biggest piece of advice would be to take advantage of the networking opportunies that are offered and learn as much as you can about the work you are doing. Oshkosh offers so many networking events and not only are they fun, but they help you meet other people (interns and full time employees) that you may not meet in your day to day work. Also, take the time to ask questions and absorb as much information as possible, internships are a unique experience in that it is expected that you still have a lot to learn, so take advantage of it.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

Being exposed to a production engineering environment and learning more about the incredibly interesting and powerful products produced in each of Oshkosh Corp's many segments.

What I wish was different

I wish the type of project I had been assigned was different. I was given a sort of exploratory project that was difficult to make progress on because all of the tools at my role were new to me so it took a long time to even become capable enough to start working on my project. I wish I had been given responsibilities like those that the full time engineers in my role had.

Advice

Try to get as immersed in the role as possible. Its important to understand, as well as you can, as many different aspects of the mechanical engineering field as possible.

Sustainability Intern

May - August 2018 • Oshkosh, WI

What I liked

Being immersed in the functioning of a major corporation. I really enjoyed working with my coworkers and meeting other Oshkosh employees.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been a little bit more hands on and had more of an influence in the production, but since I was working for corporate I had limited opportunities for that type of work.

Advice

To follow your heart. I know it sounds cliche, but I got a very good internship offer from another company before I heard from this one, but followed my gut and turned it down then was lucky enough to land this one of my dreams (which turned out to be even more incredible than I anticipated)! There are so many amazing resources on this campus to help you land a really fulfilling internship such as the one that I just had at Oshkosh. The career center is full of extremely knowledgeable people with great connections to help you prepare your resume and yourself for an interview to ultimately land your dream internship/job. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CENTER and you will be well on your way towards incredible experiences.
