Audit Intern

June - August 2019 • Traverse City, MI

What I liked

• The people at this firm are some of the most caring I have met throughout my recruiting process. • When they say “We Care” they truly do. Both in the communities they are in and about each other. • In addition, people working together to come up with solutions on complex situations is very evident. • They have the resources and lean in on one another to come up with these solutions. • Lastly, I’ve also enjoyed learning about the different service areas and office locations Plante Moran has to offer.

What I wish was different

• If I could do something different, I would have tried to be more thoughtful about learning what "my purpose" for the firm was during the internship.

Advice

• Try to ask thoughtful questions and get an understanding on who to go to for the questions you have! • List up your questions when working on a project, but also try to utilize the people put in place to help you.

Audit and Tax Intern

January - April 2020 • Toledo, OH

What I liked

This internship was a great learning experience. I was able to work on audit engagements as well as tax projects. Everyone in the office was very welcoming and more than happy to answer questions. Free meals and snacks during busy season are always a plus! The office coordinated a lot of fun activities during busy season such as bowling, chili cook-off, weekly trivia and other activities to maintain a balance between long work hours and fun activities.

What I wish was different

I really cannot think of anything that I wished would have been different. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic did interrupt the internship. However, Plante Moran did not end the internship, but we did work from home for the last month of the internship. While it was disappointing and different to work from home, Plante Moran handled the situation very well, and it was a great learning experience.

Advice

I would say don't be afraid to ask questions and don't be intimidated by long hours.

Audit Intern

June - August 2019 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

I really liked how the work was meaningful. The work performed was the same as that of a new hire so what you did each day was actually helping clients. Also the rest of the staff were very helpful in teaching different skills or techniques that you might not learn from class. Plante Moran has a great team environment where everyone works together to help clients and better each other.

What I wish was different

I wish that the experience could have been a little longer, which the winter internships are I was just unable to make that experience work with my class schedule.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions even if they may seem dumb. You are not expected to know everything on your first day.

Summer Intern

June - August 2024 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The people you work with have the best spirits and best intentions for you to learn as much as you can in the short amount of time I interned over the summer. I never felt like I was struggling with what to do as the training was so thorough and informative. The staff really care about you and want to make sure you are learning and enjoying your time with Plante.

What I wish was different

Over the summer, the biggest struggle for me was not enough work sometimes. I found my self every now and then searching for work, but then that gave me time to work on other intern activities.

Advice

If you are looking for work, look at your partner's schedule and see if you can join meetings they have coming up so you can learn more about different topics you would have if you hadn't reached out.

Assurance Intern

June - August 2021 • Denver, CO

What I liked

I really enjoyed working with everyone, the people and staff are great and fun to work with. My favorite part of the internship was being able to work in person because I had more opportunities to network with and meet new people.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship would have been longer and started earlier in the Summer with the same end date.

Advice

If you are not super familiar with the field you are interning with, i.e. tax or audit, you may want to freshen up on parts of that practice in order to understand the language and key concepts. I do not think this would make or break an internship if you have no prior knowledge with the field but it definitely helps!

Audit Intern

June - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I loved that I had the same experience as someone who was a first year full-time staff. I engaged within teams and my opinion was valued even though I was an intern. My partner also helped me explore areas of accounting that I wanted to learn more about. I always felt valued and didn't feel like "just an intern".

What I wish was different

Honestly, I loved my internship and the entire experience.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions. A new job is always a little overwhelming because everything is new. Everyone has been in your position, so do not be afraid to ask for help. Everyone at Plante Moran were willing and happy to help.

Assurance Intern

June - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I liked that I got to work on real clients throughout this experience. I never thought that I would be interacting with clients and doing real audit work, but Plante Moran gives their interns work that is similar to that of first year staff. It was a great environment to learn about audit procedures.

What I wish was different

As a DePaul student, the only thing that I wish would have been different was the start date. Everything about the experience was perfect.

Advice

It is never too early to learn about the career path you want. I had no experience in audit before this internship but I learned a lot and found out that the audit is where I want to be in public accounting. Asking questions and getting to know the people you work with allows for the experience to be more fun and you get more out of the experience.

Financial Advisor Intern

June - August 2018 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

I loved that I really got to experience what work as a new-hire would be like! I didn't just sit around and make copies, but performed tasks integral to the success of our clients. It really gave me a good understanding of whether or not this was something I would want to do as a career, and the people I worked with are very invested in my success whether I stayed at the company or not, which took a lot of pressure off of my shoulders.

What I wish was different

I wish this internship had been longer. I felt like as soon as I got all of the software and strategies down pat, I was saying goodbye!

Advice

You're going to be overwhelmed at first, and that's okay. It's kind of like drinking water from a fire hydrant: you're only going to retain so much. It's hard to learn the ins and outs of what Plante Moran does for its clients over the course of just one summer. I'd say go in with the mindset that you aren't going to know everything right away, and that it is only expected that you learn as much as you possibly can in such a fast-paced environment.

Assurance Intern

June - August 2017 • Kalamazoo, MI

What I liked

Even though I was an intern, I was treated like a staff member and was not given "chores" to do such as getting coffee. I was given real work to do that contributed to the audit and I felt like a team member. I was able to work in the office and travel to the audit site to work with clients. It was a great experience to see what it would be like to work there one day.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship would have been longer than two months.

Advice

Meet as many people as possible during your internship and don't be afraid to ask for extra work.
