HR Intern

May 2019 • Medina, MN

What I liked

I got to do real, meaningful work. The projects I worked on were all actually used, and were projects a full time employee would have been doing if I wasn't there.

What I wish was different

I had a slow start to my internship and sometimes didn't have much work to do.

Advice

Network a ton, ask everyone on your team for more work to do if you are bored.

Sales & Marketing Intern - Indian Motorcycle Product Management

May - August 2018 • Medina, MN

What I liked

I loved the challenging, fast paced, environment. As a primarily engineering company, Polaris succeeds only when they are bringing new, innovative products and strategies to the market. The company moves quickly to stay on trend, and they also run a very lean team meaning everyone carries a significant work load. It is also a very cross functional company that requires clear communication between business units and functions, as well as employees with a lot of technical, engineering knowledge and those with strategic business and marketing knowledge.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have had a bit more feedback. My coach for the summer was very busy and it was difficult at times to feel I had received adequate direction before completing a project because he did not have enough time to train or fully explain my tasks. While the limited guidance created a great opportunity to operate independently, it was hard at times, and intimidating, to feel I was operating on so little information and experience.

Advice

Before you join a company, have an honest, internal understanding of the corporate culture. I knew I was stepping into an environment many found harsh and too fast paced, but knowing this made it easier and my expectations adjusted accordingly. The more you know about a culture in advance, the better you will be able to gauge if it will be a good fit or not. I also learned it is absolutely key to stand up for yourself when you are confused and always ask questions, but be willing to take a leap and try something every once in a while. Being able to balance challenges and a need for guidance is an important skill in fast paced companies.

Manufacturing Intern

July - December 2021 • Roseau, MN

What I liked

Great team: I had a chance to work around engineers, group leaders, supervisors and managers to provide answer to issues related to the safety, quality, deliver and cost of materials, equipment and process. Also, I had a chance to participate in Kaizen initiatives. The best of all is to work around great people. They do care about you, and you feel welcome every time. Great social involvement: Polaris is also an example to the community. I had a chance to participate in the PolarisGives - a philanthropic initiative to help children, hospitals, and other programs while biding Polaris products. PolarisUniversity: It is an internal library to obtain training and got a certification in some aspects. I had a chance to obtain my certification from how to ride side by side, snowmobiles, and the famous slingshot - along with other office certifications. They also have the in-person training for the ATV's

What I wish was different

It was a nice place to work. I honestly liked. However, talking on the housing side, perhaps a second fridge must be helpful. But, the work itself is great.

Advice

Talk to the leaders/managers and give your ideas, do not waste time wondering if your idea is good or not - just say it. Get involved in Lean initiatives to support their plans.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish had been different is just the location of the company. It is located in a small town therefore there is basically nothing fun to do around. I wish I had gotten an offer in one of their company in big cities.

Advice

One thing I have learn is the power of networking. I would advice students who are going on internships to connect with those they work with.
