What I liked

The support system & culture at the firm is great! I always felt encouraged & challenged constantly to do better.

Advice

I would say be open to meeting and networking with a variety of professionals. I reached out to other interns and employees in other teams and I was able to jump on projects that broadened my perspective on the different lines of services at the firm. As well as my supervisor was impressed with how comfortable I was with setting up coffee & lunches with different people. So definitely get out of your comfort zone and network! You’ll meet a lot of amazing people and don’t be afraid to ask about their career experiences and challenges because professionals enjoy talking about themselves.

IFS Start Intern

June - July 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The Start Intern at PricewaterhouseCoopers in the New York metro area allowed me to become a better professional within six weeks. “Be well, work well” are exercises practiced throughout the company that allows employees to bring his or her whole self to work. These exercises made me realize that sometimes you have to step back and take a break from the overload of work. I was also able to step outside my comfort zone and learn things that I did not know.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have connected more with associates and asked many more questions.

Advice

Some great advice I learned along the summer is keeping in contact with everyone you meet because you are building your network.

Accountant Intern

June - July 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I loved how much they emphasized bringing your whole self to work and prioritized life balance. It helped make the environment feel less stressful and you could tell that the office benefited from it. Additionally, everyone there was extremely helpful and took time out of their busy schedules to meet with me when I had questions or wanted to schedule my own shadow experiences, especially in Advisory.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more of a direct pipeline for working Advisory in the Detroit office. I made it well known since my first day at the office that I was interested in Advisory/Consulting however that was not a particular aspect of the START Internship (they mainly focused on tax and audit). Nevertheless, I was able to create my own shadow experience with the professionals in the Advisory/Consulting line of service and they were instrumental toward me realizing that is what I want to do.

Advice

Keep an open mind, don’t be afraid to speak up and be sure to absorb as much information as you can. Everyone there including the recruiters, partners, and staff of all kind want to see you succeed and they do a great job at helping you do so. As long as you are willing to go out of your way to learn, they will reciprocate that and find ways to educate you. I was very nervous about this internship because I was previously a Social Work major before switching to Accounting (very different, I know) and I was fearful that “everyone else knows so much more than I do” but as an intern, they do not expect you to know everything - they care more about what you are willing to learn and how well you work in a group. They offer a tremendous amount of support and mentorship, so take advantage of those connections and understand that any knowledge and experience that you bring to the table is just as important as everyone else’s.

Start Intern (Internal Firm Services)

June - July 2019 • Houston, TX

What I liked

My favorite part about my internship was expanding my professional network and being able to work with real accounting professionals whether it’s helping on projects, shadowing, or simply participating in networking events.

What I wish was different

I believe the internship could’ve benefited from another week of shadowing experience.

Advice

Don’t be scared stepping out of your comfort zone, and don’t doubt your potential. They know you are new to the field and they will understand you won’t know everything and that’s completely okay. Have confidence in yourself whether it talking to professionals or simply taking on additional tasks.
