Mechanical Engineering Intern

What I liked

It was highly collaborative, as projects were worked on by people of all engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, systems) as well as other fields marketing and industrial designers. The projects that I worked on were used directly in the next iteration of the product and supported the R&D process.

What I wish was different

Many of the tasks were modeling based, but I was not able to gain experience in FEA, which was one of my goals. Some tasks and projects lacked direction or expertise.

Advice

It is helpful to have manufacturing experience prior to R&D in order to understand how to design for manufacturing. Go into the internship with an idea of what processes you want to be exposed to and what skills you want to develop, and suggest tasks that accomplish this goal.

Online Marketing Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to collaborate with my team members and learn about different parts of digital marketing. It has been a great opportunity to expand my experience and learn about different marketing tools.

I enjoyed everything about my experience so far.

Advice

Ask questions and treat every day like an interview. Do not be afraid to speak up if you are confused and always ask for more work if you do not have any.

Field Service Representative

What I liked

It was enjoyable working in the field and traveling from site to site rather than working in an office all day. Getting to travel and having the freedom to work in different environments was a great aspect of this job. Working on industrial equipment and learning customer relationship skills are extremely important aspects in this area of work and this job has taught me both of them very well. Being self motivated is very important for this job because there is not a supervisor watching over you all day telling you what to do. The freedom is great, but it is easy to fall behind with your work if you do not stay on track.

What I wish was different

There is nothing I really wish to be different about this job, everything is good. It gets overwhelming sometimes and other times you are twiddling your thumbs looking for something to do. I guess if I were to change something, it would be to have a more steady work load rather than being extremely busy one day, then having nothing to do the next.

Advice

Do not stress knowing everything about a job going into a it. It is easy to get overwhelmed by all the responsibilities and required skills to land a job. As long as you have a basic understanding of what you are getting into, and you are willing to listen and learn, a good company will take the time to properly train you everything you need know in order to be successful.
