What I liked

TCS has training program that is called ILP or initial learning program which was held remotely at the height of the pandemic. The pay was decent for what you were doing and they provided you with equipment. The flexibility of working from home and being able to travel was nice. The ability to continuously learn and grow my skills was emphasized and rewarded.

What I wish was different

I was told during ILP that most new hires are expected to stay with their initial assignment 2+ years to gain some experience working. I happened to be the rare case and went through 2 projects in 18 months before I tendered my resignation letter. Once I was on a project, it was often difficult to do additional training and courses without developing a lack of work/life balance. Was required to complete certification trainings and examinations during work hours and was reprimanded because I should've done it after hours. What should've been a 2 month process of ILP training, turned into almost 4 months of training due to their inability to train effectively virtually and having not adapted well since we were one of the first ILP batches onboarded during COVID.

Advice

TCS means continual learning especially in programming, behavioral and managerial areas. The key word there is continual and it was opposition for completing this during business hours. Unless you are working onsite or out of a TCS office, it is not an easy job to manage remotely.

What I liked

TCS has training program that is called ILP or initial learning program which usually placed in Ohio facility for Eastern and south zone new joiners. I like their trainers which are really good teachers and they taught me very well. During the ILP time, we, 35 new joiners resided at Hilton hotel at Ohio which was excellent and the environment of the office was really very helpful. After ILP, I joined a project at Wilmington, Delaware and because of the Pandemic, I'm working remotely from New York. My Manager, recruiter and mentors are really very helpful and well motivators. I like the TCS life.

What I wish was different

I thought, the new joiners will leave TCS after 6-12 months of their employment but the scenario is quite opposite as almost 90% of our mates are still in TCS. Pros : All employees need to complete a lot of courses and needs to get certified in every new fiscal year for getting upgradation in their respective position to ameliorate the career.

Advice

TCS means continual learning especially in programming, behavioral and managerial areas. Don't miss the chance of getting hire as they gave salary hike and bonus in every fiscal year upon considering the progress. Someone needs to attend 3-4 30-60 mins meetings a day which are required for them as a daily basis. The medical insurance is little more expensive but TCS has a very good employee perking policy. The only problem is the ultimatix ticket which take a long time to resolve.

What I liked

Free travel to India

What I wish was different

I wish they offered me a more secure job placement, since my whole team got laid off within a year. Hoped they would care more about their employees when sending them abroad. The India team had no idea who I was or why I was there. Their communication is abysmal.

Advice

Don't work for Tata.

Data Science Intern

What I liked

Gained a lot of technical skills and tested my skillset in ongoing projects along with senior managers and experienced coders.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to work on a couple more projects and broadened my experience. For the entirety of the two months, it was solely geared towards machine learning.

Advice

Take initiative, get familiar with people, ask them what they're working on, and if it sounds like a good fit, ask your manager if you can be part of that team for while. Ask as many questions as you can.

What I liked

The client I work with is a reputable chip manufacturer in the Bay Area. TCS offers security in that if you switch positions or relocate you are still an employee. It is in their interest for you to be working for a client. Training is provided as part of onboarding.

What I wish was different

Some of the internal company workings take a while to go through. Pay is okay for the area considering the cost of living.

Advice

TCS may be a good option if you are looking for early work experience.
