Individual attention, meaningful projects, helpful management, interesting events to attend, great facility and benefits, laid back office culture, lots of young people
What I wish was different
More chances to do projects with teams other than your own
Advice
Take advantage of how easy it is to connect with upper management. They are very willing to give advice, field questions, and hear what you have to say. And always put in 100%, because they see it!

Accounting Intern
June - August 2019 • Carlsbad, CA
What I liked
I thoroughly enjoyed my team this summer. My manager and coworkers were all so kind and generous to give up their work time to help me better understand how I should approach my projects. I was exposed to a wide variety of skills and programs that will definitely be beneficial to me later on. The HR team was great at keeping all the Carlsbad interns in-touch and engaged. There were monthly networking events and cool opportunities exclusively for interns that allowed me to know my peers better.

Product Data Management Intern
June - August 2019 • Carlsbad, CA
What I liked
This was an incredible experience to learn how to navigate a corporate environment while learning the company, completing an advanced and meaningful project, and networking. Throughout the summer I was able to attend a number of professional speaker sessions with only 4-10 interns at a time, set up 1:1s with VPs and work in a cross functional role. I was given complete responsibility and ownership on a project that allowed me to creatively solve a problem and implement the solution globally. I could not have asked for a better summer experience at Thermo Fisher.
What I wish was different
I wish they had planned intern events earlier in the summer by about two weeks so that getting to know other interns would be easier. This is a huge company and just the Carlsbad site has over 2,000 employees. However, the intern class still became great friends and I still keep in contact with a good number of them!
Advice
Don't be afraid to reach out to anybody to sit down for coffee or a 1:1. You're not only at Thermo Fisher to work on a project but also to learn from seasoned professionals. Also don't be afraid to ask for help cross functionally. I worked in operations, but was asking coworkers from Finance, Data Science, Marketing, etc. to help and review my project constantly throughout the summer.

Engineering Intern
October 2016 • Kalamazoo, MI
What I liked
I like the amount of responsibility that I hold within the company and the leadership experience that I have gained over the past two years.
What I wish was different
I wish that collaboration between certain departments would have been more effective. Certain departments had much more resources than Engineering, but Engineering tended to have a much higher work load that could have been resolved with the aid from other departments (i.e. Quality)
Advice
It's important to do what's right. There are situations that aren't addressed in a standard operating procedure, and your critical thinking skills and quick responses will determine your success in any job.

Sr. Steriles Process Engineering Co-Op
May - August 2019 • Greenville, NC
What I liked
I loved the opportunities that I was able to have while on co-op. I got hands-on experience and I essentially worked as a full-time employee.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have been able to obtain a full-time job offer right as I left, but I understand the circumstances.
Advice
Don't be afraid to move for co-op. It was such a great experience being able to live in a new location that I am not sure I ever would have if it weren't for this co-op.

What I wish was different
Wish I could have sit in on more meetings with different departments.

Accounting Intern
May - August 2019 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
It was a great experience to see how private accounting works and to see the work environment. I improved my skills in excel tremendously and will be able to use that in the future.
What I wish was different
Halfway through my internship my work load was cut in half, which led to me having very boring work days where I would not have anything to do.
Advice
If you are unsure about anything ask questions and write everything down so you do not forget. I referenced my notes for everything I did to ensure I was doing the work correctly, and if I was not sure I would ask questions.

Electrical Engineering Intern
May - July 2019 • Cleveland, OH
What I liked
The people were amazing and the work was very interesting. I was able to work on products pertaining to radiation measurement, something very unique amongst co-op students. I was even able to design and create a printed circuit board (PCB)!
What I wish was different
I was really only given one, sometimes two projects to devote my time towards. Whenever a slow point in the project was reached, work became slow as well. I wish I was able to participate in more work.
Advice
Speak to your more experienced coworkers! They have amazing stories, experiences, and advice that is worth hearing.

Mechanical Engineering Intern
May 2019 • Logan, UT
What I liked
I really liked designing parts and working with the matching shop to get the parts built. My mentor was really good at taking time to answer my questions and helping me have a successful internship.
What I wish was different
I wish there had more opportunity to use engineering skills that I have developed in school. I got to work in a 3D modeling software, but I would have liked to do more of the math work.
Advice
I was nervous in the beginning to ask questions because I felt like was bothering people. I found that asking questions opens up the door of clear communication.
