What I wish was different

More Consistency, wish I didn't have to work with Outsourced Indian Phone support. I never knew what they were going to be doing when I called. Oftentimes was sent damaged parts that caused the repair to fail. Would have to repeat dispatch, could never tell whether they were sending me back out to the same location or not. Seemed like the really trouble some repeat dispatches they would send me back out. But on the easy repeat dispatches they would give them to other people. Essentially felt like they were always trying to set me up to fail. Virtually no training program. was a week just riding around with another tech. shadowing him.

Advice

Good way to get your foot in the door in the tech world in Portland. You will meet with a lot of different clients at businesses which can help you network. Don't take too many classes alongside you working. As your schedule will be so chaotic that you won't be able to go to classes on time unless your really quick. With your jobs. Than if you are really quick they will overload you. Maybe just don't do it if you can find something similar with more consistency and orgarnization, than I'd take that. Only take if you really enjoy drving.

Corporate Accounting Intern

What I liked

I really enjoyed learning how a big company is ran from the eyes of corporate. It was great to learn accounting practices and the systems they used. It was also interesting to learn about the management structure of a big company and how the chain of command works.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been hybrid but Unisys is now a permanently remote company.

Advice

I would encourage students going into an internship to reach out to other employees in the company to see what they do and help out on projects outside of your daily day-to-day.

RPA Finance Intern

What I liked

There were regularly scheduled check-ins with my supervisor, who made sure that I had everything I needed to do my job, and would advocate for me in situations where I wasn't sure what to do. I liked how much hands on experience I had with RPA. I was also informed of how much of an impact that my work had on reducing the number of labor hours needed to complete certain tasks. Additionally, I was recognized by the company for my contributions.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more business aspects of my internship rather than all just programming. I was given some tasks that let me practice my Excel skills, but it was less use of my analytical skills based than I had hoped for. I also wish that there was more of an effort to help interns get to know each other and recent grads who could guide interns. My mentors were amazing, but much older than me.

Advice

This was a completely virtual experience for me, and the networking aspect is definitely what you make of it. It can be difficult and feel awkward, but it's just as important to get to know the people as it is to get to know the work.

What I liked

Enjoyed the company's ability to still host an internship program despite it being 100% remote. Equipment, training and numerous resources were provided to the interns to ensure the best learning experience.

What I wish was different

Only thing I wish was that there were more opportunities to get to know some of the other inters. Most of my days, I solely interacted with my team and my manager, so there was not much opportunity to get together and meet some of the other interns.

Advice

Do not be afraid to connect with employees that either work on different teams or in different departments. Networking within the company you are interning at is a great opportunity to learn more about different roles, responsibilities and career paths.

What I wish was different

I wish that my schedule was not a graveyard shift as that has been very hard on my family and personal health, but it is the schedule that allows me to attend classes.

Advice

Always be willing to learn new things. We are professional Googlers sometimes.

What I liked

I liked how I am working at an established company with a name known in the industry. We also have a lot of cool interesting projects that help real world people and organizations.

What I wish was different

I wish I did my due diligence with the company more. They don't have a good program for recent graduates so it is hard to get the right learning and experience.

Advice

Dont just settle for your first job offer. Always look for something better until you sign your offer letter. Finally, make sure you do your research on a company about the culture and what its like to work there before signing.

Don't be overwhelmed, everyone is very accommodating to your learning pace. Don't be late for meetings! And look into the company before the interview
