Park Interpretive Specialist (Seasonal)

PARK INTERPRETIVE SPECIALIST (SEASONAL) –  SAN LUIS OBISPO COAST DISTRICT / HEARST SAN SIMEON STATE PARK

Job Description and Duties

The reporting location is the Interpretive Staff Office at William R. Hearst Memorial Beach – Hearst San Simeon State Park, 750 Hearst Castle Road, Morro Bay, CA 93452. This position will work under the supervision of the State Park Interpreter III and under the general direction of the State Park Interpreter II.

This individual may assist volunteers and staff with visitor services and promote the interpretation programs of Hearst San Simeon State Park and outreach throughout San Luis Obispo Coast District. This position may also assist staff by acting as a lead volunteer coordinator for the Elephant Seal Docent Program at Hearst San Simeon State Park. This individual will also work in various visitor centers throughout the District, providing excellent customer service and interpretive support. Successful candidates will learn cultural, natural, and recreational resources within the district and may interpret them in programs such as educational walks and talks, Junior Ranger programs, school tours, campfire programs, roving interpretation, outreach programs, social media and virtual tours.

Work shifts will vary (25-32 hours per week, Sunday- Wednesday and/or Wednesday-Saturday). Must be able to work holidays, weekends, and evenings. The purchase and wearing of a State Park uniform is required and State Park grooming standards must be met. Bilingual Spanish speaking candidates are highly encouraged to apply. This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. This position is designated as not telework eligible.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

Possession of a valid driver’s license of the appropriate class and a safe driving record as documented by the Department of Motor Vehicles within 60 days prior to appointment. (A safe driving record is one free from convictions in the past two years for repeated moving violations or a single serious violation, such as drunk driving or reckless driving.)

Working Conditions

Leading guided walks among large marine mammals in open wildlife areas from January to March.

Varying times of the day including weekends, mornings, and holidays.

Work environment may have exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, conditions, hours, elevations, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, fog, UV exposure, average water temperature 55 degrees Fahrenheit, changing ocean conditions and/or loud noises.

Work in a range of changeable coastal conditions.

Lead ocean-based kayak tours in San Simeon Bay during spring break and the summer season.

Walking or hiking into remote areas of parks with a wide range of terrain.

May be exposed to extreme weather.

Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
