Outdoor Education Instructor

PAY RATE: $105/day

Housing and Meals are provided.

Work hours vary depending on the needs of the Camp. Staff are expected to work nights and weekends on a semi regular basis. 

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

To ensure campers, rental and user groups have a fun and safe experience while leading them through their time at YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer. This is a hands-on field position that directly involves teaching and leading groups of students and adults in outdoor, environmental, recreational and challenge course activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plan and teach classes to groups of children, young people and/or adults in four disciplines of adventure, outdoor skills, environmental and historical.
  • Supervise outdoor recreation activities related to schools and groups visiting camp.
  • Maintain specialized outdoor education equipment.
  • Assist with special programs and events.
  • Assist with cleaning and preparation of camp facilities.
  • Lead night hike, campfires and other evening programs.
  • Assist with curriculum development and program planning.
  • Lead groups in the dining hall with food procedures, cleaning procedures, and set up.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings, staff trainings, and in-service activities.
  • Provide safe and responsible atmosphere for children and adults to learn and grow.
  • As skill level dictates, provide emergency care to all participants.
  • Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate Degree in Education, Recreation, Environmental Science, Biology, Botany or relevant field preferred. Not required.
  • Experience in outdoor education and facilitation of high and low challenge courses preferred.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent certification preferred. Training will be provided as needed.
  • High School Graduate or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Must be passionate for working outdoors with youth, teens, and adults.
  • Comfortable outdoors and familiar with outdoor recreation and natural sciences
  • Ability to obtain First aid and CPR training. Training will be provided as needed.
