Game UI UX Intern

Job Summary

The role of the UI/UX Intern is to support the design and delivery of engaging, user-friendly interfaces and player experiences for Agents of Influence. This includes assisting with wireframing, prototyping, and refining UI layouts, as well as conducting user research and playtesting to gather feedback on usability and accessibility. The intern will collaborate with narrative, art, design, and engineering teams to ensure cohesive player-centered experiences that enhance both gameplay and educational impact.

About the Company & Project

We are Alterea Inc., an experience design company based in Los Angeles, CA. Through live and digital mediums we create experiences that draw on historical research and emerging art forms to explore and highlight participant agency. Our core team met as undergraduates at the University of Southern California designing experiences that combined immersive theater and interactive gaming.

 

Agents of Influence is an in-development educational video game that teaches students critical media literacy skills such as research, analysis, and effective conversation. We are seeking a UI/UX Intern to join our team and help design intuitive, engaging, and accessible player experiences. We’re looking for someone who is creative, detail-oriented, curious, and passionate about how thoughtful interface and experience design can shape impactful learning. This person will gain hands-on experience in wireframing, prototyping, user research, and collaborating with narrative, art, and engineering teams to deliver player-centered solutions in a mission-driven startup environment.

 

This is a part-time, remote, unpaid internship with the potential for increased responsibility and compensation based on performance.

Location and Work Environment

This is a fully remote position, allowing you the flexibility to work from home or another suitable location. To succeed in this role, you’ll need:

  • Reliable Internet Connection: A stable high-speed internet connection (minimum 20 Mbps) is required for video conferencing and accessing company tools.
  • Equipment: You should have access to a reliable computer with a webcam and a headset. If needed, the company can provide additional equipment to support your work.
  • Workspace: A quiet, distraction-free workspace is essential for meetings and focused work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing intuitive and accessible game interfaces through wireframes, prototypes, and layout mockups.
  • Conduct user research and usability testing to identify pain points and improve player experience.
  • Organize and maintain UI/UX design documentation, including style guides, interaction flows, and accessibility guidelines.
  • Collaborate with narrative, art, design, and engineering teams to ensure visual consistency and usability across the game.
  • Support playtesting logistics and synthesize usability feedback to inform design decisions.
  • Contribute to the creation of user-centered resources, onboarding flows, and in-game learning support features.
  • Help iterate on UI elements for clarity, accessibility, and engagement.

     

 

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in UI/UX design and user-centered experiences in games or interactive media.
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or similar prototyping software.
  • Good visual design sense, attention to detail, and ability to create clear, well-structured layouts.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills for conveying design intent.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams in a remote environment.
  • Bonus: Experience conducting user research or usability testing.
  • Bonus: Knowledge of accessibility best practices in digital design.
  • Bonus: Familiarity with Unity or game development workflows.
  • Bonus: Passion for educational games, storytelling, or design for impact.


     

Additional Responsibilities

  • Work in a timely fashion to meet deadlines and support team projects.
  • Adapt to new tasks and responsibilities as needed, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to learn.


 

Compensation and Benefits

This is an unpaid internship. There is potential to grow into a paid role.
