Grounds Crew Leader

The Grounds Crew Leader at the Como Park Conservatory and Zoo Campus plays a key role in ensuring smooth daily operations by supervising and supporting staff responsible for custodial services, special event setup, facility maintenance, and fleet care. This position leads by example, promotes a safe and welcoming environment for guests and staff, and ensures the campus is clean, operational, and visually appealing year-round.

Location: Como Park Conservatory & Zoo Campus open 365 days a year.
Schedule: Tuesday – Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; may include weekend, holiday, and other hours as necessary to support business operations

Here's what you can expect to do:

  • Leadership & Supervision: Schedule, lead, train, and coach a team responsible for the daily operations of the Zoo and Conservatory campus.
  • Operations Support: Oversee setup, tear-down, and cleanup for special events and facility rentals.
  • Custodial Duties: Ensure high standards of cleanliness throughout buildings, exhibit areas, and public spaces.
  • Fleet and Equipment Oversight: Maintain and monitor the condition of fleet vehicles and equipment; report and address issues as needed.
  • Seasonal Maintenance: Coordinate snow removal and other seasonal maintenance tasks to ensure safety and accessibility.
  • Facility Care: Conduct routine maintenance and basic repairs for buildings and exhibit areas; identify and report larger facility needs.

Position Requirements

Two years of experience as a Parks Worker III with the City of Saint Paul or 4160 hours of equivalent experience that would have included maintenance of parks grounds and facilities and the maintenance and repair of related tools and equipment, or four years of experience as a Parks Worker II or 8320 hours of equivalent experience as listed above.

Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsements for tanker and hazardous materials and no restriction for airbrakes. The hazardous materials endorsement must be obtained within 6 months from appointment.  The CDL must have no suspensions or revocations for driving-related offenses during the two year period prior to date of appointment. Suspensions for parking-related offenses are excluded.

Must possess a Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License with categories:
A & E presented to the hiring authority by time of appointment.
Prior completion of department-created technical training program for Grounds Crew Leader is desirable.

Assessment: Qualifications Rating

The Qualifications Rating is an assessment of your completed application and answers to the Supplemental Questionnaire.
