Why does MTR exist?

Educational inequality is one of the greatest human and Civil Rights issues in America today. Memphis Teacher Residency (MTR) is a faith-based, non-profit organization founded in 2009 to recruit, train, and support effective teachers in a Christian context. Our mission is Christian love expressed in equal education.

Who is eligible for the residency?

  • College graduates (anyone graduating before June 1, 2026 can apply)
  • Minimum GPA: 2.75
  • US Citizens or Permanent Residents
  • Any major!
  • We are motivated by the Christian faith but open to people of all faith backgrounds

Why should I apply?

Proven Effectiveness: MTR is the top-rated teacher training program in Tennessee. Over the last six years, MTR graduates were the most likely to strongly agree that their teacher preparation program prepared them well overall. To learn more about our results, check out www.memphistr.org/results.

Quality Support & Training: We provide a full year of training before you lead your own classroom. You’ll earn your Master’s, co-teach with an experienced mentor, and receive ongoing coaching throughout the four-year program.

Benefits: During the residency year, residents get a $15,600 living stipend, free housing, free Master's. Upon graduation, our teachers earn an average $55k starting salary and can qualify for loan forgiveness.

Community: Teaching can be isolating, but you won't be alone at MTR. MTR emphasizes community through a cohort-based model, shared housing, and neighborhood-based school placements that foster lasting relationships and support.
