Radio Technician (Emergency Communications)

About the Role

We’re looking for a skilled Emergency Communications Program Specialist's to help manage and maintain Montana’s vital public safety communication infrastructure, including land mobile radio systems and the statewide microwave network.

In this role, you’ll troubleshoot complex and interconnected systems, lead on-site projects, and ensure our communications network is always running at peak performance.

You’ll work under indirect supervision, often independently, and occasionally lead contractors and temporary personnel to ensure safe, efficient project delivery.

While this position does not directly supervise staff, it plays a crucial role in statewide operations and reports to the Emergency Communications Technical Supervisor.

What You’ll Do

  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot land mobile radio and microwave communication systems across the state.
  • Use advanced diagnostic tools and methodical analysis to resolve complex technical issues.
  • Oversee contractors and personnel during on-site installations and repairs.
  • Prioritize work based on critical Department needs to ensure continuous emergency communication coverage.

What We’re Looking For

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (related field preferred)
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience
  • Other combinations of education or experience may be substituted.

Required Knowledge & Skills:

  • In-depth understanding of land mobile radio systems and FCC regulations
  • Strong knowledge of electrical/electronic engineering principles
  • Experience installing, maintaining, and repairing specialized digital and analog communication equipment
  • Familiarity with computer networking, including LAN/WAN systems
  • Proficiency with electronic diagnostic tools (spectrum analyzers, system analyzers, soldering equipment, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with P25 trunked radio systems
  • Knowledge of T1 and Ethernet microwave systems
  • Familiarity with MPLS networks and network administration
  • Experience with supporting site equipment (generators, HVAC systems, DC power)
  • Tower climbing certification or ability to become certified
