Building and Fire Safety Inspector 1

The State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking a Building and Fire Safety Inspector 1 to join the Facility Licensing and Investigations Section (FLIS), part of the Healthcare Quality and Safety Branch. This position will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and quality of healthcare facilities across the state. Read below to learn more!

 

THE POSITION:

In this role, you will conduct in-person inspections of healthcare facilities—including nursing homes, hospitals, dialysis centers, ambulatory surgical centers, and clinics—to ensure compliance with fire safety codes, building construction standards, and physical environment regulations. Your work will support state licensure and federal certification programs (such as Medicare and Medicaid), helping to safeguard the health and safety of patients and staff across a wide range of care settings.


Please note: Candidates who are offered and accept a position with DPH Facility Licensing and Investigations Section must be free from conflicts of interest at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter in accordance with the CT Code of Ethics and complete all required trainings.

 

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Location: Hartford, CT
  • Schedule: Typically Monday - Friday
  • Hours/Shift: Full-time (35 hours per week), First Shift

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:

  • Conduct comprehensive on-site inspections of healthcare facilities
  • Review facility documentation and building plans, gather data, and assess physical environments - both interior and exterior- to ensure alignment with regulatory standards and certification requirements
  • Collaborate with facility administrators to communicate findings, explain code requirements, recommend corrective actions, and support compliance through technical consultation and follow-up
  • Document and report inspection outcomes, including writing citations, completing federal and state forms, preparing narrative reports, and presenting findings and meetings, conferences, or hearings as needed
