Part Time Museum Educator

 

Museum Educator

The Maryland Center for History and Culture is seeking part-time Museum Educators to join the Education and Engagement Department, lead guided programs for students and adults, deliver exceptional customer service to our patrons, and support program coordination and development. We are seeking candidates who have an interest in inclusive history and museum education, enjoy working with the public (including children and families), and feel comfortable speaking to groups. Training on MCHC collections, exhibitions, primary source inquiry, tour methodology and themes, and museum policies will be provided. 

This position reports to the Museum Learning Manager and is part of the Education and Engagement Department that includes five full-time staff. 

Responsibilities

  • Support the coordination of all program/tour reservations;
  • Deliver school programs and adult tours;
  • Assist with onsite program development and implementation, including research, supplies preparation, facilities set-up and clean-up, and creation of new tours and programs;
    • This includes School Programs, Group Tours, and Student Research Center for History (SeaRCH) sessions.
  • Coordinate the Traveling Trunk program with the Museum Learning Manager, including arranging UPS pick-ups/deliveries, reviewing the condition of each trunk monthly, and assessing ongoing revision processes;
  • Support Museum Learning Manager in management and training of volunteer docents and student interns;
  • Assist with marketing and audience cultivation among PK-12 educators and adult learning communities via templated email communications, other outreach, and interdepartmental collaboration; 
  • Support engagement with the Education Committee, an external advisory group, by communicating with members, making preparations for meetings, and recording related minutes;
  • Support Education special projects and periodic public programming as needed;
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • HS diploma or GED required. AA or BA in Museum Studies, Museum Education, History, Art History, Public History, Education, or related field preferred; 
  • 1+ years of experience delivering engaging programming with children, especially those in grades PK-12;
  • Excellent verbal communication and customer service skills, tailored to interaction with students, educators, and adults of varied backgrounds;
  • Ability to lead indoor tours/programs for up to 3 hours;
  • Ability to lift at least 25 lbs.;
  • Passion for history, art, and education. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, M365, and Google Docs/Sheets/Drive;
  • Multi-lingual proficiency, especially in Spanish or ASL;
  • Knowledge of, and interest in U.S. and Maryland history.

 

About The Position

This is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt, 21 hours per week position at $20/hour. Museum Educators will largely work on weekdays, with some week-by-week flexibility to be coordinated with the supervisor. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required, which will be communicated in advance.
