Job Summary:

 

The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for Various FTE , 12-month, fixed-term, Faculty Research Assistant or Senior Faculty Research Assistant 1 position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.

 

Appointment at the Faculty Research Assistant is anticipated; however, higher rank maybe considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.

 

The position will collaborate with faculty and researchers at the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute (OCCRI ) by developing metrics and indicators of risks associated with natural hazards, particularly those related to climate, and potential actions to reduce potential harms from natural hazards. The position also will apply strategic foresight methods to evaluate how potential alternative futures may affect hazards, harms, and risk reduction.

 

The position will apply reliable quantitative and qualitative analysis methods; collaborate with colleagues at OSU , other universities, state and federal agencies, and interested and affected organizations; and translate data on climate, natural hazards, and harm reduction for non-technical audiences.

 

OCCRI was created in 2007 by the Oregon State Legislature under House Bill 3543. OCCRI facilitates research on climate change and its effects on natural and human systems in Oregon, provides climate change information to the public and technical assistance to state and local governments, and assesses the state of the science of climate change as it applies to Oregon and the likely effects of climate change on the state.

Key Responsibilities

 

50%. Access, compile, and synthesize information on climate, climate change, natural hazards, and their effects on human and natural systems. Document methods, results, and inferences for communication to technical and non-technical audiences.

 

25%. Contribute to collaborative development of scenarios of alternative futures that may affect probabilities of natural hazards and harms from those hazards. Contribute to identification of potential actions to reduce harms that are robust to alternative plausible futures.

 

20%. Provide technical support on development and communication of information on climate change, hazards, and associated indicators to governmental and non-governmental partners.

 

5%. Other project management and communication duties as assigned.

 

What You Will Need

 

Minimum Qualifications for All Ranks

 

• Master’s degree in geography, geographical information science, or related field.

• Expertise in integration of environmental and social data.

• Experience with geographic information systems.

• Experience in collaborating with academic and agency partners on topics related to climate change and natural hazards.

• Experience in communication of science to technical and non-technical audiences.

 

Additional Required Qualifications for the Senior Faculty Research Assistant I Rank

 

• Expertise in analysis and management of data related to adaptation to climate change and natural hazards.

• Experience in facilitating sustained interactions among government and nongovernmental partners.

• Experience with analysis and communication of social and economic dimensions of adaptation capacity.

• 5 or more years of experience in management of complex, multi-institutional projects.

 

What We Would Like You to Have


 

• Experience in hydroclimate or climate science.

• Experience with land-use planning at the state level.

 

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

This position is part-time and hourly. Work schedule is flexible. We anticipate some ebb and flow in the number of hours worked per month (less than 0.49 FTE ) to accommodate other responsibilities of the employee and project schedules at OCCRI . Remote work will be considered; if remote work is agreed on by the employee and supervisor, position may require occasional travel to Corvallis to meet with colleagues at Oregon State University and with collaborators outside the university.
