Urban Transit and Mobility Engineering Internship - 2026

Are you ready to shape the future of mobility in the world’s most vibrant cities? Mott MacDonald is seeking a passionate and driven Transportation Planning Intern to be part of transformative projects that will define how people move through the city for decades to come. As a Transportation Planning Intern, you’ll work alongside industry leaders on high-impact projects that support sustainable, inclusive, and innovative transportation solutions. You’ll contribute to planning efforts for major infrastructure developments, multimodal networks, and event-driven mobility strategies. 

Based in a collaborative team environment, you’ll contribute to technical analysis, assist in preparing reports and proposals, and engage with clients and stakeholders to help shape sustainable transport solutions. Your work will span areas such as corridor analysis, data interpretation, and strategic planning, with opportunities to grow your expertise in line with your interests and strengths. Your contributions will help drive innovation and support Mott MacDonald’s continued growth in the transportation planning sector.

As a participant of our internship program you’ll gain hands on experience across a variety of impactful projects. Your responsibilities may include:  

Assisting in developing transportation plans, studies and models 

Analyzing travel behavior, transit ridership and traffic patterns 

Supporting stakeholder engagement and public outreach 

Collaborating with engineers, urban designers and data scientists 

Contributing to reports, presentations and client deliverables 

Supporting project and client meetings 

Leveraging digital tools, innovation and GIS technologies 

Driving sustainable outcomes 

Building connections through our Early Career Professionals Network  

To be considered for this opportunity, here’s what you’ll need:  

Progress towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning and Engineering, or related field  

Demonstrated interest in your chosen field through previous internships, volunteering opportunities, or organization memberships 

Creative thinking skills, with a methodical and pragmatic approach to problem solving 

Proficient communication and presentation skills to engage confidently with clients and colleagues 

Resilient, solution-oriented mindset, with a focus on continuous growth and delivering value 

Ability to build and maintain relationships and rapport with internal and external stakeholders 

Collaborative spirit and commitment to teamwork  

This position will be located in Los Angeles, CA; Orange County, CA; or San Diego, CA. You must be able to reliably commute to our office in one of these locations, per our hybrid working policy.

At Mott MacDonald, we provide a comprehensive benefit package that includes 401k, medical, dental and vision insurance, short-term/long-term disability, paid holidays, PTO, parental leave and company paid life insurance. 

The expected salary for this position is $18-$35 per hour. 

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
