LWR Power Uprates Intern

⚛️ Advance the Future of Nuclear Energy with INL!

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is hiring a graduate-level intern to join our Plant Optimization Department for the LWR Power Uprates and Multiphysics Optimization Project, starting as early as January 2026. This internship supports INL’s Thermal Power Expansion Project, focused on achieving thermal power uprates through multiphysics optimization of in-core reactor design and primary systems—helping reduce fuel costs and enhance nuclear plant performance.

As part of this team, you’ll collaborate with leading INL researchers to apply advanced modeling, simulation, and AI-driven optimization methods to improve reactor efficiency and innovation.

Minimum Requirements:

Enrolled full time in a Master’s or Ph.D. program in Nuclear Engineering.

Experience with core lattice and fuel depletion system codes (e.g., CASMO/SIMULATE, PARCS, POLARIS, SERPENT).

Experience with thermal hydraulics codes (e.g., RELAP5-3D).

Familiarity with machine learning and evolutionary optimization algorithms.

Experience in software development using Python or Fortran.

Minimum 3.0 GPA and authorization to work in the U.S. (including CPT/OPT).

Preferred Skills:

Experience with INL’s in-house machine learning code – RAVEN.

📍 Onsite at INL – Idaho Falls, ID
🗓️ Spring 2026 | Start as early as January
🕘 9x80 schedule (every other Friday off)
🎓 Graduate-level internship | Course credit may be available

Join INL’s world-class researchers and play a key role in advancing nuclear reactor design, optimization, and performance through data-driven innovation.
