Assistant Music Director for Musical Theatre Production in Monteverde, Costa Rica
Far Corners Community Musical Theatre seeks energetic, creative individuals to assist with our Costa Rica Theatre Camp, an intensive summer theatre program for the community with an emphasis on youth, children and adults. Join us in the breathtaking Cloud Forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica as we stage the first ever Spanish production of The Addams Family Musical with a fantastic, diverse group of performers.
This is a full time seasonal position. The applicant must be available to be on-site in Costa Rica from June 8th - August 5th, 2026. If you have any conflicts with the arrival date please indicate this in your application.
About the Program:
Costa Rica Theatre Camp is an 8-week summer program for the community, now celebrating our 20th year of operation. The primary focus of the program is producing a musical from the canon with a cast and crew of local Monteverde performers and a production staff of college-aged interns from both the U.S. and Costa Rica. The goal of the program is to provide a high-quality educational experience for the participants, fostering their artistic and personal development.
Required Qualifications:
- High school graduate and at least one year of college, or equivalent work experience
- Music performance or education major preferred
- Intermediate Spanish proficiency OR commitment to significant study in preparation for the summer
- Experience playing in musical theatre pits is preferred
- Intermediate to advanced Keyboard skills highly preferred
- Creativity and willingness to work in a non-traditional theatre setting where resources are limited
- Experience working with children/youth/adults/elders
- Interest in and open mind towards immersion in a new culture
- Flexibility, patience and maturity
- Leadership experience
- Excellent creative problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail
- Commitment to abide by our drug/alcohol policy
- Strong ability to give and receive constructive criticism
- Ability to work long days in a fast-paced, intensive environment
- High level of self-awareness

Assistant Music Director Responsibilities:
- Assist Music Director in preparing the score, planning rehearsals, and leading warm-ups.
- Assist Music Director during vocal and orchestra rehearsals.
- Teach music to teen performers, under the supervision of the Music Director.
- Review music with and coach singers one-on-one.
- Play keyboards or other instruments in the pit orchestra; lead pit orchestra rehearsals as assigned by the Music Director.
- Coordinate set-up and break-down of the pit; assist music director in planning and executing pit orchestra rehearsals.
- Assist with other aspects of the production.
- Keep thorough digital records.
Costs:
Our program has an extremely limited budget. We are a small non-profit organization and as a result we ask our interns to contribute financially. Many interns receive funding from their colleges/universities which covers part or all of the internship fee.
The internship fee is as follows:
- Full Internship: $3500
- Flexible Internship: $2500
The fee does NOT include airfare. Round-trip airfare to San José, Costa Rica typically costs between $400 and $800 from major U.S. airports.
The internship fee includes:
- Room & board (3 meals per day) with a Costa Rican host family
- Weekly laundry with host family
- Work-related transportation within Costa Rica
- Some tours and activities with participants
- Training and supervision
- Spanish for Theatre classes for beginning and intermediate speakers
Need-based financial aid is available, up to $1000 for the full internship and up to $500 for the flexible internship (this aid does not apply to airfare). To apply for financial aid, please email us.
