About the Internship
The Environmental Engineering Group, a sub-group of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Group and part of the overall Engineering/Architecture Design Division of the Engineering Department, is responsible for Environmental compliance of Federal, State and Local regulations for all Agency construction projects and facility operations. Types of projects include subsurface investigations, remediation of contaminated sites, preparation of design contract documents for construction projects, acquisition of environmental permits and monitoring compliance of facility operations. Our goal is to provide cost effective, safe, and appropriate engineered solutions for all Port Authority projects.
Responsibilities
- Assist staff of Environmental Engineers and Scientists in performing tasks. This includes attending progress meetings, preparing design and contract documents, site visits, submittal reviews, auditing, and other tasks as needed.
- Perform field work to gather data related to permit compliance or other regulatory required programs.
- Complete field inspections using our standard checklists and communicate the results and outcomes of the inspections and any corrective actions.
- Assist in the preparation of Regulatory reports and plans related to stormwater discharges, underground and aboveground tank storage tanks, air emissions, hazardous and non-hazardous waste generation, remediation forms, and other areas as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship
- Major in Engineering (Environmental, Civil, or related discipline)
Desired Qualifications
- A minimum of one (1) undergraduate level course in Environmental Engineering.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Teams, CAD, GIS, and Word
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Interest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region
- Interest in public service and/or transportation
- Willingness to learn
Internship Details
- The start date will be Thursday, May 28, 2026
- The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on August 21, 2026
- This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)
- In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.

Compensation & Benefits
- The hourly rate range is $18.07 to $30.31 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
