Health Operations Intern (Summer 2026)

This position is a paid, full-time, limited term assignment at our Austin, TX headquarters that offers interns the opportunity to gain substantive hands on experience. Interns enjoy the opportunity to get training and mentoring from experienced professionals in one or more areas. Interns may also be eligible to continue working part-time through the fall and spring semesters, depending on department and agency needs. .

The Health Benefits Operations Student Intern performs entry project work related to their field of study and health benefit administration. The incumbent will support agency operations with a primary focus on gaining practical work experience and business skills for personal development or to satisfy educational requirements. This position reports to the Director of Operations within the Health Division.

This position will be for the Summer 2026 from June 4th until August 7th. 
Salary will be dependent upon education level:
Undergraduate (Junior or Senior) - $19.50/hour
Graduate Student - $21.00/hour


WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Health Operations
• Develops project to review eligibility and enrollment operational processes and procedures, analyze performance data, identify process improvements, procedural efficiencies, develop performance reporting dashboards, and recommend process changes that maintain or increase customer satisfaction.
• Develops project to measure and track retirees’ inquiries and satisfaction with the services health benefit counselors provide.
• Constructs and administers surveys, analyzing data, and developing dashboards.
• Designs and implements automated reporting solutions and interactive dashboards to track retirees’ inquiries, satisfaction with health benefit counseling services, and related performance metrics.
• Develops processes for data collection, automation, and visualization to deliver actionable insights that support strategic initiatives and communication efforts.
General Functions
• May assist in researching, compiling, and analyzing data; entering data into spreadsheets, databases, and other automated applications.
• May assist in reviewing and analyzing agency policies, procedures, and forms and recommending changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
• Assists in completing special projects and performs other work as assigned.

• Performs related work as assigned


 

WHAT YOU WILL BRING:
Required Education
• Currently enrolled in and actively attending an accredited college or university as an undergraduate student with a declared major in a related field such as public health, business administration, or a related program AND within 12 months of graduation; OR
• Enrolled as a graduate student (Master or Doctoral) in a one of the fields listed above or a related program.
• Applicant will be required to submit a copy of official college transcripts.
Required Experience
• None.
Required Registration, Certification, or Licensure
• None.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience working on similar projects to the ones described above.
• Experience or study in a related field such as social work, sociology, anthropology, psychology, or marketing.
• Letter(s) of recommendation from program professor(s) are strongly encouraged.
• Experience using Microsoft Office software to include Power BI.
• Experience using SQL server data.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
• General office practices and procedures.
• Concepts and practices of proofing, editing, and preparing informational materials.
• General health insurance terminology and definitions.
• Research and data analysis techniques.
• Microsoft 365 products including advanced Excel operations, Power BI, Power Automate, and CoPilot
Skills in:
• Organizing and prioritizing work to manage a high-volume workload in a fast-paced environment and completing work accurately while meeting deadlines.
• Conducting data searches and evaluations of large amounts of information, performing complex analysis of the data, and preparing concise and accurate reports and written/oral recommendations.
• Verbal and written communication of complex information that is accurate, timely, and based on sound judgment.
• Simplifying complex topics into easy-to-understand language.
• Providing quality customer service.
• Reviewing documentation; properly applying complex laws, regulations, rules, and policies; and making decisions based on sound judgment.
• Using a personal computer in a Windows and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) environment, and accurately performing data entry.
• Using Microsoft Power Business Intelligence (BI).
• Using & managing SQL server data.
Ability to:
• Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with co-workers, agency staff, and other external contacts.
• Work effectively in a professional team environment.
