Engineer, Emergency Preparedness/Distribution Automation

Job Summary

 

Long Island is looking for a Summer 2026 Engineering Intern for the
Emergency Preparedness Department.

This job involves working as an intern engineer to support the team in maintaining, expanding and supporting the functionality of the Distribution Automation DSCADA System.  The group works with several different pieces of distribution equipment such as switches, reclosers, automatic throwovers, pad mount gear, capacitor bank controllers and more that are configured by the  Distribution Automation Team.   This team is central to several areas so there is interaction among several departments across Transmission & Distribution.
This position will be Onsite.

 

Job Responsibilities

Assignments will include working alongside professionals in the following areas:

The Distribution Automation group is involved in several high profile capital projects that include Commission Reclosers (ACRVs), Implementing Fault Location Isolation and Service Restoration in Distribution SCADA, 2-way radio Cap Controller integration and updating GIS mapping data.  The individual will assist in the following:
•    Testing of configurations and verifying configurations on the Distribution SCADA Test System prior to rollout into the Production Environment.
•    Support the team’s engineers and help in supporting the programming, testing and deploying of new configurations for the DA System.
•    Assist in day-to-day review of the communications logs and switch repairs; work with operations personnel to commission new equipment.
•    Processing of GIS mapping files and scripting/programming to enable better functionality and automation on various systems.

 

Job Specific Qualifications

Qualifications
•    The successful candidate(s) must be actively pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited institution in Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering and graduating between December 2026 and June 2029.
•    Students graduating in May/June 2026 are not eligible unless they are enrolling in a post-graduate degree program in the fall term of 2026.
•    PSEG Long Island recognizes institutions of higher education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.
•    Candidates must have completed sophomore level course work for consideration.
•    This position will require traveling to various PSEG Long Island locations, a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record is required.

Desired:
•    Pursuing an Electrical Engineering degree with a 3.0 GPA
•    Knowledge of Networking / TCP/IP, LINUX, software scripting/programming and communication systems.
•    Have good communication and writing skills.

All PSEG Long Island internship roles are paid at an hourly rate, however there are no medical benefits associated with these positions. Candidates are expected to work 40 hours per week over the duration of the summer internship. We are targeting currently enrolled/matriculating students that are able to commute to their designated work location as needed. Housing, transportation, and immigration support will not be provided in association with these positions.
