Position Title: NPS HPTC Build Up Engineering Intern—Yosemite National Park—AmeriCorps

Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placements

Site Location: Yosemite National Park; El Portal, CA

 

Terms of Service:

  • Start Date: 5/18/2026, Preference given to applications submitted by 2/27/2026
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 900 hours, 26-weeks

 

Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

 

HPTC utilizes historic preservation projects as the main vehicle for teaching preservation philosophy and building crafts, technology, and project management skills. Our experiential learning approach emphasizes flexibility in addressing the unknown conditions encountered during the project and ensures that the goals of preservation are met.

 

Yosemite Facilities Management Design and Engineering team are technical experts, providing professional engineering and project management services to the Facilities Management Division and to the park as a whole, supporting the mission to preserve the resources and values of the National Park System. We provide a positive example of a professional, capable, and collaborative, engineering and asset management organization.

 

STE in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals for an exciting new opportunity as a HPTC Build Up Engineering Intern. Selected members will support Yosemite Design and Engineering team by assisting with design, analysis, and documentation across many Park initiatives. The role typically involves hands-on work with engineering tools and software, data collection, troubleshooting, and collaborating with team engineers to develop practical solutions. Members will gain exposure to real-world engineering processes, strengthen their technical skills, and contribute to meaningful projects that advance the team’s goals.

 

Description of Duties:

  • Serves as a team member engaged in the planning, design, and construction of park facility repair and rehabilitation projects.
  • Performs detailed measurements of existing infrastructure and enters data into databases.
  • Analyzes and performs condition assessments and identifies deficiencies in existing facilities and systems.
  • Researches and drafts standard design and construction details for the park.
  • Assists with topographic survey and GIS mapping.
  • Assists with the development of a cost estimating database to track and analyze construction cost.
  • Drafts and edits technical engineering reports and effectively documents project work and other accomplishments

 

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • Minimum of 1 year into an Engineering degree program
  • Experience with Civil 3D & Microsoft Suite

Time Requirements:
 

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday through Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service 
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

 

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

  • Living Allowance of $700 per week & Additional Benefit of $140 per week (Equivalent to $21/hr pre-tax)

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
